I've been debating on getting the i-Roast but before I make the leap I have a few questions
1) How smoky does it get if you use indoors? Is the external venting kit required to really do it inside? If someone is using the venting kit - does it work well and not cause any additioanl issues (chaff collection, etc)
2) It appears there are a few folks out getting incosistant results from the i-Roast. Obviously there is inconsistancy on the beans, etc. Would you wait to 'see' if the issues are resolved? (If major issues)

My simple solution for roasting indoors is to place the machine on my cooktop underneath my exhaust fan. With roasting decaf I rarely have to turn the fan on but with regular right before the first crack is when I stand at ready.

1)Depends on if you roast into the 2nd crack or not. NOt too bad at City Plus. No real mess indoors. The venting system works nicely with flexible dryer connections out the window. I'll be doing it all winter.
2)I think you will have to learn your own machine. It has the ability to do anything, you just have to learn how to run it. I would not suggest using the pre-sets.

IMO inconsistency is more often experienced by those who program a roast profile and wait for the results. By far and large, I have not had problems with inconsistency for the reason that I rely more on sight and sound to determine the degree of roast. It's not really fair to cite the roasting device as the culprit. Experience is the key to consistent roasting.
Additionally, it's not just a little smoke that the indoor roaster need be concerned with, its also the odor that can fill a house. However, this is easily overcome.

Thanks all for the feedback on the smoke... I live in an OLD house so no overhead exhaust fan. But I can rig the dryer vent. Odor is not an issue - at least not to me and I live by myself :)
I figured the inconsistancy resulted in the a) roaster b) beans c) profile for roasting... glad to confirm my thoughts.

Getting nice looking, good tasting beans in the iRoast is a snap (pun intended). Getting from 'good' to 'better' is the fun of it. So, get one and join in the fun.

Roasting indoors with the i-Roast is definately possible. I've been doing it on the stovetop with the exhaust fan sucking up the minimal smoke I have. I say minimal, with the exception of the 1st roast where I didn't know what I was doing. Not that I know what I'm doing now mind you, but at least I'm not setting off fire alarms!
However, you may want to get a strong cleaning agent 'cause you'll be needing it from time to time. Even though there's not a lot of smoke, there's still some significant oils in the air that end up on the hood area of the vent that will need to be cleaned and ordinary soap doesn't seem to cut it... I've found that a good orange cleaner works just fine.
BTW... I also have a Microwave above the stovetop and whenever I open the door I get a good whiff of roasted coffee!
