Well, a friend at work got a computer fan the other day that is really powerful. I started wondering how hard it might be to get it some power and fit it to the upper half of a popper assembly, maybe up my batch size a bit. I've got a toastmaster with a fried fan from my 1st mod attempt, would love to see it reincarnated as a 6-8 oz roaster deluxe..! Mostly I've only seen variacs discussed at mod sites and in forums, haven't seen very specific info on doing a mod like this. Here's a fan with 75cfm: http://tinylink.com/?9kXrOxvV9S
Probably adapting it for use would be a hassle compared to something not made for computer use, but that's the basic idea. I'm slowly wading through various types of fans at mcmaster-carr but haven't found anything appropriate yet. Any advice would be great! tom:)

My first thought is that you might run into problems with a lack of heat. A larger volume of air is going to run cooler I would imagine. But if you've got a popper that is too hot already, then this could be a good hack.
I have had similar thoughts about building something like a popper chamber w/ a heat gun, Sivetz sample roaster style. Then of course you could hack a PID into the temperature control of the heat gun...
I'll get right on that after I pressure mod and PID Miss S. and get that microswitch working and... oh dear, I really am having fun :D

1) pricewise, I'd look at getting one of the industrial heat guns that do 600° + crazy cfm of fan speed -- they're like $70 (or you can just go for the gg/sc combo which costs as much). modding a popper that much is going to cost more in the long run.
2) i'm looking for fans as well -- i want to set up some exhaust tubing and build a chamber so i can roast in the kitchen next to the window, and have a fan suck out all the smoke through a tube. i found some fans here: http://herbach.com/

Well, I have it on good authority now that computer fans ain't it, but you can use.. a vacuum :)! Perhaps another look at that variac at coffee bean corral.. Or I can throw off my shackles (my thermocouple anyway), take a jaunt Mr McKoffee's way and try a wok.. tom:)
