What's a good simple roaster?  How much does it cost?

I'm making an excel spreadsheet to see the startup costs (if you want a copy of it, shoot me an email)

I have the SonoFresco roaster, but after Jon R (rawman) and I had a chat, I realized that the price is obscene!  $4000 for a one pound roaster!

But, Sivetzes are huge, and Probats and Diedrichs require tons of experience and training.

Maybe one of those tabletop roasters that "delaware city coffee roasters" sells?

Grills are kind of out of the question, since it'd be for a coffee shop and grills look cheesey.  Also, they use propane, which burns wet.

I have recently been doing alot of research on this very subject. I think the sonofresco according to my locol roaster is closer to $3500.00 and if you scour the used market you might get a little better deal. They do only roast a lb at a time but they do it in 8-12min. My local roaster has two of these going at a time and then runs and extra one during busy seasons. Sivetz has a 1.3 lb roaster that costs $3000.00 un delivered. It looks like a racing car muffler. I've read good things about the Sivetz but it seems biased. Both only roast around a lb at a time for around the same amount of time, and the savings is $500.00 a unit. If it was my decision I would either try to replicate on or buy the Sivetz. I wouldn't really trust something on a more commercial (steady all-day use) unless it was designed to do so. Still it has opened my eyes to the fact that I can do a lb at a time for alot less money. Let me know what you come up with, Joe

Jon:

You have picked the one I would go with. It seems like a good deal and is always talked about on the roaster forums.I have heard nothing but good from this manufacturer and you could go to Florida in the winter and bring it back! Kill two birds with one stone. I love efficiency!!  :)

Wish I could take credit - but I only know about these because another CoffeeGeek in town recently purchased one of each and has invited me over to see them.  I'm looking forward to checking them out.

what about one of These seen on ebay?

I e-mailed the guy, very friendly....just more than I wanted to spend for a new hobby/adiction at this time.

I have no ties to this company = just passing on info.

I don't know how far along you are in developing a business plan, but any startup requires a lot of research and close scrutiny.
I like a quote someone told me once, "Owning your own business is like owning a boat. The best day is when you buy it and when you sell it."
Good luck.  I would meet with a financial planner and figure out to what extent you will be able to finance your venture.

Man those look like some serious machines. Quite an invesment. I was thinking you were trying to stay under $4000.00 at least initially to see if it'll even work out. Plus those machines look like they take up alot of space and I don't know what kind of space you're thinking of renting (don't buy a retial space, there isn't any tax advantages and they usually don't appreciate like residential) Most coffee shops start out as kiosks some where and then when the person is ready to jump with both feet in they go for it. Let me know if you have any questions to that regard. Joe
