Hi....after a couple of weeks with the Melita Clarity, I've determined that it's necessary to tip it over about every 2 brew cycles to purge the water tank of previously heated stale water, which returns to the tank at the end of the brew cycle...roughly about 3 oz of water...probably a bit nasty to the tastebuds. The purging process is a bit inconvenient, but necessary, I believe... Question: does this problem manifest itself in the Technovorm line, especially the model recently reviewed by Mark?

I haven't seen (or tasted) any problem with my Technivorm (Moccamaster CD). My TechV retains 3.5oz of water below the water reservoir like your Clarity. I tasted the retained water that I'd poured into the measuring cup and it had no bad flavor other than being warm. This was done about an hour after I'd brewed a pot and turned the machine off.
I've seen the same thing in my Clarity at work, but it hasn't colored my coffee at all so far as I can tell. I'm using bottled spring water, and I tasted it (the next day after) when I noticed it was in there.
Now I turn the machine upside-down on Monday mornings because I figure that water set all weekend and who knows what grew in there over the weekend.

Same here...although I guess you'd be replenishing the stale water every day...that is, every brew would kick out the stale...brew...then leave a new 3oz of water at bottom...and so it goes!!
I believe that issue would only arise with the Mocca Master technovorm, because of the horizontal water delivery tube... didn't mean to cause anyone consternation! ciao

I, too, own the Clarity and found the water retention problem. So far, I have not been overly impressed with the machine as far as the coffee having a superior flavor to my old Cuisinart machine. I will probably go back to the Chemex. We make coffee at home approx. 4 days a week. Because a family member has low immunity, I fear the Clarity may form some bacteria in the retained water and cause health problems.
Better safe than sorry...for a drip, this thing is pretty good, although the finished brew is not nearly as hot as I expected...several degrees under the temp of my finished "mini" eSantos and B&D Infuze vac pots...
