Welcome to the Coffeegeek forums! {:-) The basic principal is all the same, but Sweet Marias used to carry the Swiss Gold extra fine insert that goes in the Bodum French press's filter assembly. It cuts down on supended solids & less sludge in the cup.There is one other press, the Tirra by Trudeau that doesn't press the grounds to the bottom of the press, but it pulls the grounds up & out. Bob Roseman (brokencup) has one & can fill you in on it, I'm sure!
I just bought 2 Trudeau FP's & they have a very fine nylon screen between the stainless steel mesh screen & the uppermost stainless perforated outer part of the press assembly.

Sweet Maria also sells an extra nylon screen that fits the Bodums. Used with the original press, it cuts down on the sludge. Not as good as the no longer available Swiss gold.

Bodum makes a metal one called the columbia or some such. It's a thermal carafe meaning it will keep the water warm as it brews. You still need to pour it into your favorite thermos or mug to prevent overextraction when it's done brewing. Other wise, the bodums are sold at target cheap, so if you break the carafe, it's cheap to replace.

I was at target yesterday, and saw a returned Starbucks Barista French Press (just like a Colombia) for $9! I told my friend that if he wanted a press, he should get that.

Well, yesterday at work my French Press (made in China) fell and broke...the whole office was in tears for me... I took the plunger and started inserting it in various cups and mugs we have on hand and discovered that the standard 8 oz Duralex glass (made in France) was a perfect fit.
So, I now FINALLY have a REAL FRENCH press. best myron

Howdy all! First post on this here Forum. I've a question regarding the plunger assembly in a Bodum/Starbucks 8 cup press. At the "screening end" of the plunger shaft, there's a black plastic fastener that the screen assy tightens up against when you assemble it for brewing after cleaning. I've noticed that this black plastic fitting isn't threaded so it continually slips up the rod a little, thereby lossening the whole screen mechanism. The thing separates 1/2 down the plunge! I've seen others that have a proper metal, threaded fitting that holds the darn thing in place as it should. Am I doing something wrong , or is this a poor design?

Sounds like a bum unit. Contact Bodum and tell them the situation and then request a metal replacement cylinder nut. They should send you one. They have sent me two free of charge!
They're more or less the same. I have a plastic bodum "give up bad coffee for good" 12 ounce french press and another Ikea glass 24 ounce french press (just like the Bodum glass ones) and I've seen that they both make identical results as far as how good it is. I made a few amazing pots on the plastic one (because I use it more).
Plastic is nice since it wont break when it falls down, but glass is nice as well. I like the plastic bodum because the plunger is metal, but the screen is plastic and its all one piece (plunger and screen). I think bodum glass ones are over priced, so if you see a cheaper one, get that. If you have an IKEA near you, check if they have the "kaffe"

The plastic one you speak of, I hate. It's cheaply made, and broke within 4 months of very light use. Also, it cost $10, not much cheaper than my $15 Bodum Brazil 8-cupper. Sure, Colombias and Chambords cost quite a bit, but that's different. I like the art nouveau look of my Brazil.
It makes some pretty killer coffee, but not as good as Vac Pot
