Michael, I don't follow your logic. Why would the liquid coffee solution that is below the filter screen not be extracted? In my humble opinion, the press method is unaffected by the proportionate useage of the maximum capacity of the press.
I probably should have used the word "pressed" rather than "extracted". When I pour from a press with liquid under the plunger that is not "pressed" the liquid under the plunger drains into the flow into the cup. It seems to pour through the edge where glass and metal meet and carries sludge (but not grinds) with it. Granted we're talking about such a small amount it probably won't make much of a difference even in the worst case. Perhaps I should take a cue from you and have one less thing to worry about, but it's easy enough to deal with, so I do. (To do otherwise might endanger my status as a true coffeegeek :-).

The mistake some people make with press coffee is that they do not decant it if making more than one cup at a time for themselves. Letting the coffee sit in the press for long periods after plunging would lead to overextraction. As long as you pour the coffee out of the press immediately after plunging, everything should be fine ... .
I heartily agree with this. My way of dealing with it is to brew one cup/mug at a time. Even if I wanted a second cup, it might be a Sumatran rather than a second Guatemalan.
