I re-read the instructions which say to tamp lightly and the CoffeeGeek review used a 1 lb. tamp! I've been using the back of a dinnerware tablespoon and tamp probably several lbs. with nice results; the MB most always produces a cuppa coffee that's a treat to drink. This a.m. I tamped harder and liked the results.
What do others do and what effect does tamping have overall?

I just use the bottom of a common bar glass. Don't really know what the advantage is to compacting it. I also get the best results with a fairly course grind. Anything too fine and the brew starts to look "muddy" As I write this I'm cupping a fine Yirgacheffe that I roasted yesterday. Life is grand!
