Subject: Triple espresso - how many grams, time, ounces of espresso

I have a Macap automatic tamper on the way and want to try doing things according to the book.  So:

  1.  How many grams of ground coffee should a triple shot be?

  2.  How many ounces of espresso should I get as a result?

  3.  How long should I wait to stop the stream - 27 seconds? or longer because it's a triple?

Now please, I know lots of people don't do it according to the book and are deliriously happy with what they get.  More power to them.  But since I have a kitchen scale to weigh the ground coffee, a very good grinder with infinite adjustment, a measuring cup, a timer, a good espresso machine, and now the ability to get the same correct tamp pressure over and over again (and yes I know you can use a bathroom scale), I want to try a disciplined approach to see what I can get.

Thank you.

First the truth:

  1. It depends.
  2. It depends.
  3. It depends.

Now what you wanted to hear:

  1. 22 grams.
  2. 1.75 ounces.
  3. 27 seconds.

Seriously, all the parameters you noted vary depending on the machine, blend, humidity, bean age, taste preference, desired flavor profile, etc. But what I suggested above is a start and you can adjust from there.

Really Dan?  1.75oz?

I understand the grams and time but...

A single is .75 to 1oz, a double is 1.75 to 2oz and a triple is approx. the same as a double?

So is a triple automatically a ristretto?

I don't have a triple basket (yet) but I had assumed an actual triple would be more like 2.5 or 3 oz.

Not doubting, just wondering.

I think its personal to how long you want your triple. Also it depends on the blend you are using too.
I agree with dan. I prefer to have a triple in little shorter. But as he said it depends, it depends, it depends.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
