I just added a steel vacuum cory to my collection.I need help.  The cory leaves about one thrid of the brew in the top section.the other problem is that I cannott get the sections apart. I unplug it and let it set for hours, and it still will not come apart. The glass rod is wedged in tight.  after awhile the only way I can get it arart after a long time is to push the top of the rod sideways, that makes me worry about breaking the glass rod.
I have a model 50 sunbeam and a bodum  neither one gives me a problem.  thanks. michael

Welcome to the coffeegeek forums, Michael.

One thing that comes to mind if not all the brew is travelling south is that perhaps you are grinding too fine. It sounds like it's creating quite a vacuum.

Michael,

I've used Cory, Cona, Hario, Silex, etc. pots for years. Several things come to mind. Cory rods seem to be the most forgiving of the filter rods that I've used. They don't like dark roasts because they tend to be more oily. They are pretty forgiving of grind with the exception of a fine grind. If you notice a grind is stalling, put a cool rag acrooss the bottom chamber, this will help. Only do this on a metal pot. Occasionally I've found the problem to be the Cory rod itself. All rods are not created equal. There are two separate sections of the rod that are put together. Sometimes an irregular seam, where the two halves are put together, can be a problem. I would suggest trying a "New Cory" rod, which is an improved version of the "Cory " rod. Also try grinding a little finer than a drip grind with no more than a full city roast bean. If this doesn't help, let me know.

You don't mention the grinder you are using.  I have been vac pot brewing with a Hario pot and a Cory rod for about a year now and love this method of brewed coffee.  Last summer I bought a Zassenhaus grinder so that I could relegate my Mazzer mini for espresso duty only.  Turns out that the Zass grind had too many "fines" or small dust particles that clogged up the Cory rod.

The Zass has now been doing duty as my french press grinder at work and I am back to using the Mazzer for vac pot at home.

I had the same thing happen when i forgot to empty my grinder after adjusting for vac grind. I always run it for a minute or two empty to blow the fines out before actually grinding. Stalled my Cory (glass) for the first time.

Bottom line is that fines are the problem, at least for me that is.

thanks for the help. I have three different grinders, I never had a problem with the plastic bodum santos, until  It died. I also have a sunbeam mo.50.  I find this a great improvement over the model 30. the fifty has two leavers that lift the top bowl up. works great.
Where can I buy a new cory rod.??   I will look over the results from each grinder to see which makes a nice corse grind with out to mush dust.   again thank you all. glad I lucked into the site.  michael

There are three different Cory rods available. I find them on ebay for a few dollars. There is a "Cory Rod" which is about 6 inches long, a "New Cory Rod" which is also 6 inches long and a "New Cory Rod" which is 6.5 inches long. The glass end on the longer rod is a little thinner than the other two. Of the three rods, the longer Cory rod works the most consistently. The shorter rods tend to bounce around more and occasionally stall.
The more consistent coffee grind will probably solve your problem and you can pick up the better Cory rod at your convenience.
Hope this helps.
