Subject: Newbie Coffee Questions....

Well.....I love coffee.  Heck, I confess to loving Tim Hortons...:)
But I enjoy making my own on the weekends.  I get freshly roasted beans from a local coffee shop once a week.

One thing I want in a coffee maker is to not have something too big, I don't need to make 5-10 cups at a time.  One or Two cups is what I'm looking for.

What I currently have is:
$10 Melitta grinder from Zellers.  Has a fine-course setting wheel and seems to work fine.

$15 4 cup drip coffee maker from the grocerie store with a screen filter in it (makes more like 1-2 large cups).

I know many of you are probably shuddering at the equipment I am using.....but I gotta say, it makes some pretty damn good coffee!!  Maybe its just hard to make 'bad' drip coffee?

ANYWAY, if I were willing to invest some money in a better setup, partly for even better coffee, partly for something a little nicer looking, what would everyone recommend?  Again, I don't want a large 10 cup coffee maker.

I would even be willing to get a decent espresso machine, but I'm not truly into espresso (yet), and if they don't really make 'coffee', then they aren't much use to me at this point.

Thanks!!!

If You just want good coffee you probably got a great set-up already.  I do recommend a stainless carafe coffee brewer, it brews the coffee and that's it.  Most coffee makers sit there and cook the coffee (you can taste when a glass carafe has been cooking for awhile).  I have a Starbucks (the only thing they make that I like) Aroma, it only brews up to 8 cups.  It brews directly into a stainless carafe that will keep the coffee warm even after 24 hours.  You can get a gold cone (you said you use a screen filter) that works great and doesn't waste paper and actually gives you more of the oils from the coffee.

Thanks.
When using the starbucks brewer, what is the smallest amount you can make in it and still have good results?  Can you make just two cups, for example?

Yes, just adjust your coffee amount and water.  The gold cone filter will make even a single cup without any negative results.  Starbucks will tell you to use 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water.  I don't know why they say that because if you use that recipe with their coffee you get a very strong and muddy cup.  Just experiment untill you get what you are looking for.  Also, I have brewed only a couple cups into the carafe and it still stayed hot for hours.

Just looked at some of the starbucks stuff.  Ever tried the STARBUCKS Barista Aroma Solo?  Looks like a good alternative for a smaller brew amount?
Also, are the starbucks grinders any good?
