Everyone is comparing Aerobie to a French Press -- but I'm looking at it, and I can't help but think its a chemex using a plunger to work with a finer grind.

Am I wrong here?  Can someone who owns both chime in?

I own and operate..both.
I think the aeropress brew tastes like a cross between Chemex and Cold Press.  It feels very low in acid, meaning it does not bother my GERD, yet blasty in caffeine.  Chemex filters feel thicker, and the brew has a little more taste I think.  I like the Aeropress, it's faster than the chemex.

Hi Coffeesnob63,

My introduction to the fact that lower temperature water makes less bitter and less acid coffee came from my Chemex instructions four decades ago.  I thank them very much for that.

The major difference with the AeroPress is that the addition of air pressure permits shorter wet time and finer grind.

When I tested the acid level of automatic drip brew is was five times higher than an "AeroCano" made at 175F.

Of course with the Chemex you can reduce temperature to anything you like.  And of course with the AeroPress you can also choose whatever temp tastes best.  In our house, we brew "AeroPresso" and "AeroCano" at 175F, but lattes at 190F.

Best regards,

Alan
