Presto made a great first attempt at an affordable home drip coffee maker. If they had improved a few flaws(as mentioned in many reviews), had a better marketing campaign and added a model with a thermal carafe they could have ruled the home coffee maker world. I saw that Target had pulled them from their stores and
feared that the end was near. So I emailed Presto with praise for their  first attempt and suggestions as are mentioned in many reviews and this is their response:

Mr. Bourgeois,

Thank you for all your favorable comments.  You are correct, we have discontinued the coffee maker due to poor sales and lack of placement. All our remaining inventory has been purchased by Sears/Kmart and should be on there shelves in October of this year. I am not certain all of the stores in their two chains will carry the product.  They will be purchasing approximately 25,000 pieces.

Thank you again for all your comments and suggestions.

Just when an American company finally has the start of a well engineered  product line- it's over.  This is the first time I've thought of encouraging  a campaign to encourage Presto to improve the few first model flaws and improve the product idenity with appropriate marketing.  "Scandinavian"did not properly identify the strengths of the product and  the boasts of the product were not boldly identified on the box.etc.

Very disappointing indeed!  I love my Presto and I hate to know that I may not be able to get another one (I was considering one for work).  I am strongly tempted to order/purchase 3 or 4 of them and stash them away in storage.  Or I could just get my Technivorm...

Either way this is a bad deal all around.  Thanks for sharing the bad news...

i bought one for cheap and it is pretty good. i don't worry about replacing it. in a few years there should be a decent drip on the    market. i think the public is getting enlightened to that fact that coffee needs to be brewed with water just off the boil.

It  brews an excellent cup of coffee.  I had my first one for over a year and then it would only brew 2 cups and stop.  I just received my second one from Amazon.  Presto sells replacement carafes and brew baskets for the Scandanavian.

These are now at Sears online for $33.24!!! and I checked my local store and they were not in stock yet but I assume they will be soon. These units brew very good coffee at the right brew temp. but do have some issues check the many reviews on CG for details

I don't think it is that well engineered, mine as many others broke after just a few months of use. It also  has a cheap feel to it. From what I can guess from reading posts on the high failure rate you have over a 50% chance of it not working within a year or less. Its only redeeming value was that it got the water up to temp, not much to ask for......I understand most don't, but it is not that much to ask for? The Clarity was clearly a better example of high quality engineering. My Clarity has already lasted me well over a year and I can tell should last me many years.

Coming from a frugal person: I really feel you would be wasting your money on the Presto at any price, just because some have had no problems for a year or so does not make up for the chance yours won't.

I think the cheapest alternative is the TV! High up front costs but, it will last you a decade and give you high quality to boot. I don't know about the Zojirushi but they are around $100 and appear to be of high quality and get the water to temp.

Regarding Zojirushi and getting up to temp:

Someone here sent an email to Zojirushi and they said that their target temp for brewed coffee was 185 degrees f.

I just now saw them at Sears for $31.49 on sale, and I to am disapointed that they have met they're Waterloo.  Only the good , it seems, die young.
Well now would be the time to stock up I guess.
