I will visit an acquaintance this weekend and plan to gift some home roasted coffee (CME Kona blend). They have a blade grinder and will brew for drip. Would you suggest that I gift whole beans or preground using my Mazzer? I guess half-and-half is an option… what are your thoughts
Any suggestions for a good starting point on the Mazzer when grinding for drip?
And given that their drip maker probably does not get to the proper temp, I guess I should roast the kona blend dark (Full City, Vienna…). Does this make sense?

In order of preference I suggest the following:
1) whole bean 2) whole bean 3) whole bean
If they did not have a grinder I'd suggest buying them a cheap whirly blade grinder. Pre-ground would be okay if you had a way to grind it in an oxygen deprived (i.e. nitrogen enriched) atmopshere and do a true comemrical vacuum pack as soon as it was ground. Even then.... the minute the vacuum pack is opened, the coffee starts deteriorating. dependign on their frequency of usage, I'd even consider giving them two separate 1/2 pound packages and advising that they throw one in the freezer until it's needed.
Admittedly, a whirly blade grinder will create some small particles that end up as sludge in press pot coffee but if one grinds carefully and doesn't drain the last drops from the cup when drinking, it's not much of an issue. They're making press pot coffee so it's not much of an issue. I've used a cheap whirly blade grinder many times for drip coffee and have been very happy with the results (I still do it this way at the office).

yeah, whole bean is certainly preferable, just wish that the mazzer wasnt so heavy to lug around <not> :)
i seem to recall that Mark Prince did a taste testing in which the coffee was grounded in solis burr as well as a blade grinder. of course the burr grounded coffee tasted best. but i think that he also used some burr grounded coffee that was a couple of days old and the particpates actually preferred that to the blade grounded fresh coffee!
