Subject: Brewing methods and questions?

Hey all!

I am evaluating my collection of brewers and was looking for some advice.

I have a Bodum Santos 32 ounce vac pot but I am the only coffee drinker in the house and have only been doing one cup in the morning. Would it be wise to put the Bosum in the closet and buy a Yama 20 ounce pot which may make more sense for me being the only drinker?

My second questons is on drip. I use manual drip once in a while and have a small one cup melitta and large melitta. I read that Hario, Chemex and the swiss gold bodum are the best manual drippers around. However, in my opinion...you can control the brew time with any manual drip if you use the right grind...so essentially...wouldn't all manual drippers be so similar as not to make a difference? I was tempted to buy a Chemex or Bodum but I like a clean cup from manual drip, no fines.
On the swiss filters.....how do you use the swiss filter if you only buy the filter? Does it sit in a holder? Thanks!
The thing that seems interesting about Chemex is the flow rate and I would use the one cup model.

Finally, what about Turkish? Is it that different from the other methods like moka, vac pot, etc????

Thanks!!!!!!!

Rich

If you enjoy FP,why buy a vacpot, which is excellent, but quite different from a FP? For heavens sake, why not just buy a smaller FP?
The drips you describe can all produce very similar results with the tweaking you describe.
A Swissgold filter is most often used in the funnel of a drip machine. It's not make to be used alone. It is an accessory.
Turkish is enjoyed by many, even me,on occasion. Basically it is powdered coffee, boiled a number of times and served in small cups. Very strong, but can be very nice.

HI Barry! I do have a large and a small FP but there are times I like coffee without the fines or sludge so I have a larger vac pot. I make great use of the smaller FP so I am thinking I would make great use of a smaller vac pot. I may order the small Yama.

For now I may just stick to the Melittas I have around and some day grab a turkish pot.

 Hi Rich:
I didn't realize that you were really familiar with the vacpot brew.
That being the case,I can certainly recommend the Yama 5 cup. I've used one for years, and love it.
                                                      Good Luck,

Didn't you see in my initial post that I have a 32 oz Bodum Santos vac pot? Hehehe......

Anyway, thanks for the coments! The 32 ouncer is just to big for me so last night I ordered the 20 oz Yama! I like having multiple choices for my morning brew and I like the cmaller brewers since I am the only coffee drinker.

What gave you the idea I was a big FP drinker? However, you are correct....I do have about three presses, an older Bon Jour, a new 1 cup Bodum and a Tirrar reverse press.

Does Turkish offer a large change from my current crop of goodies?

I do also use moka pots a lot but retired my Bialetti 10 ounce moka and Brikka for fear of aluminum issues. I had some scares with metal toxicity recently.
The Brikka was nice but I am not sure it was that different from my standard moka and I actually like my 6 ounce stainless steel, cheap moka pot best. Now I just have the 6 ounce and huge 16 ounce stainless steel mokas. Now, I need a middle one. Hehehe.

 Hey Rich--don't know how I misread that--sorry.
I think you'll enjoy the difference between a partial vac pot,and a full pot with the Yama.
Yes, the Turkish is very different, both in preparation and result.

What would you say the Turkish is most like? Moka? I do not use much sugar and sometimes only honey and it seems Turkish requires lots of sugar! Not my thing.

Swissgold® has a one-cup pour-over manual drip unit that is complete with all you need, the Swissgold® KF 300
Available for $12.50 on Amazon.

There are some people, who reportedly make their coffee in a French Press, and then pour it through
a Swissgold® KF 300 to remove fines and sludge from their FP coffee.

You can also buy cloth filters to work with your other pourovers, available  in 2, 4, and 6 filter sizes, from various places
There is a little more cleaning involved with the cloth filter but they do even a better job filtering out fines.

I use Drip grind myself but Vacuum or Turkish grind is a great way to go if you have the time, I read this article below and it explains the different grinds in great detail and which might be for you.
