Subject: capresso CoffeeTEC impressions? INITIAL FEEDBACK NOW

I decided to get one of these units,...
but after i made the purchase, I read horrible reviews on wholelotta....3 out of 6 ave. out of 12+ reviews is not good
amazon brought my spirits up a bit 4 out of 40 bad

but there seems to be some issues with these machines....

anybody have any issues?

leaking resevoir, frother not functioning, carafe not keeping coffee warm,
coffee cold....

i need some reassurance....that this thing is worth the money...
i really wanted to get a technovorm clubline, but the  119 refurbished price changed my mind to the coffeeTEC...

i was going with the MOKA Brew, but everywhere was back ordered for under 130 shipped..

and availibility of filters, made it seem like a half-baked product offerring....to me...
they'll be some cheap on ebay eventually , so i'll try one then...

I paid $199 for mine about two years ago and I love it. Havent had any problems at all. If you're going to use the milk frother, fill the container more than half full..... it works better that way. Make sure you clean the frother after use...milk tends to get hard if left in there.

I usally pre-warm the carafe with hot water before brewing, helps keep the coffee hot longer.....
Mine brews at 199°-201°, so there's no problem with cold coffee.

Give it a try and see if you like it.

Mark did a first look review of the Coffee-Tec. Look in the review section.

***FYI***
Below is a cut and paste from the MT500 thread...
of DAY one with the CoffeeTEC...

dbh Said:

T....... So here is what I think: the machine has a problem when you load it up with coffee.  The MT500 sends the water through so fast that it literally backs up, filling up the filter holder, spilling out coffee over the side and through that hole in the filter holder.  We'll keep testing the machine before finally deciding whether to  return it.

The above analogy is exactly what is occurring i believe...
i just recieved my coffeeTEC today and I use 2/3 cup of roasted beans ....same as i do in my Kahve....[same as I always have in any coffee pot I've ever owned(except the phillips 8 cup thermal)]

results=> grinds all over the inside of the filter holder, grinds on the bottom of the water spray spigot... no coffee overflow but a sizable amount of grinds in the pot...
a #4  filter is clearly too small for the volume and speed of water coming through the unit...
the coffee was fine, actually with a little more coffee and a courser grind..it was a real decent cup....not as good as the kahve but still very solid...

you can't put over a certian amount of coffee in the capresso's, that is obvious...now my grinder is not the best , it does produce some powder, but this is drip coffee... ...the water flows way too fast...in my opinion....both happened with a gold filter and melitta brown..(x3 tries a peice)

unfortunately the holder and filter were in place correctly too..

they are very nice looking , and definately put the "Hot" in coffee...

but more than likely I'll be returning the unit [and eating the shipping both ways(nice)]....whiping up coffee grounds isn't on my list , when you talk about a $200 coffee pot[actually 119 refurb]...which is quite sad... I may try the 3-5 cup switch, though see what that does...

frother blows also...not as "special" as I thought it would have been...kay sara sara....

I'll give it a few days, see what shakes out...

the technovorm is calling...i believe

I also use 2/3 cup of whole beans...never had any overflow problems with either a paper filter, or the supplied gold tone filter. How long(or quickly) does it take to brew a full pot?

I would suggest e-mailing Capresso and see what they have to say about it.

Last week I was in a local shop where they sell the Coffee-Tec, and I noticed that the unit is manufactured in two different countries. Mine was made in Switzerland, but I see some are being made in Portugal now. I don't know if they are manufactured the same????

A good friend gave me one of these--they recieved two as wedding presents.  I've used it about 10 times in the past couple of months (I'm usually making espresso) and I like it.  I don't know nuthin' about the frothing thing, as I don't see a reason to put frothed milk in my drip coffee and if I did, I'd froth it on my espresso machine.

Anyway, I heat the carafe first, I have made as little as 3 "cups" and as much as a full pot and haven't noticed any problems yet.  I think it brews at a good rate, that is to say, faster than a standard Melita.

What I don't like about it is that the supplied gold filter is, for me, hard to clean.  I wonder if it is designed optimally as well, since the bottom of it does not allow flow, but I don't really know that much about these kind of machines.  It is a pain to clean out the filter, though.

I toggled from the 3-5 cup to the 10 cup with no overflow....
the 3-5 really slows down the brew....
i believe it must be a powder issue... halting the water through the filter...
i really want to upgrade my grinder(capresso 551 (i think)), but I'm too damn'd cheap!!

anyway it worked well this AM, don't really want to toggle, ......
so i'll let it roll a while longer...
the coffee is quite good, really starting to like the unit...
.

would love to get another kahve but the electronics only last about a year, I've owned 4 kahve's now and they all did the exact same thing...they do make outstanding coffee...

I'd be interested in a follow up on your experiences with the machine. Since I'm now commuting into work again, I'm drinking a lot more drip coffee. I need to get a new machine for home so I can bring my old one into work (the coffee here is preground and stale. What can you do?) I've been hearing mixed things about the Capresso CoffeeTEC and the MT 500.

my wife hates the machine ...
I now can't get the grounds to even come close to overflow, now...
brews a pot in under 9 min...
but I can't get anything to taste decent...except tanz. peaberry...
I'll probably return it...
it's a decent maker i guess...it's pretty huge...the frother (unless you use it ) is just baggage on the machine...
I guess I'm not impressed with it at all...
it's HOT coffee...my wife thinks it burnt...I don't drink it right away cause it is too hot for my tastes...
all in all pretty much a let down...especially cause I'm losing forty on the unit if I ship it back to capresso...
oh well..
I'm glad I did not pay 200 for it...you can only return it if you buy it from capresso.com

just for a follow up on this thread...
i returned the unit, It just wasn't that great of coffee...
It was hot, it just was that flavorful, in my opinion...
other than that the unit seemed to work fine...
not for a $200 dollar unit....

going back to the Kahve...

I found this thread a bit late.  But here's my two cents worth.

Have owned a capresso MT 500 for about 8 months along with thier automatic grinder.
So far they both have work great.  The 500 brews in 6 minutes plus 2 min. for the filter to drain.  The grinder is set at "6".  A Swiss  Gold filter is used.  The coffee is transfered to a Zojirushi carafe as soon as the brew light goes out.  I use 6 gms of coffee per cup and never brew less than 10 cups.

I roast mostly Kenya, Sulawesi, Sumatras and Harar beans all have come out delicious.  The carafe keeps it good for more than a day.  The taste changes but it is still good.
