Chemex filters are folded circles of filter paper like what is used in a chemistry lab. You should be able to get the filters for the 6 cup unit and either cut them or let them extend over the top.
You might also try a Mellitta #4 filter.

I just won a Chemex 4 cup brewer on Ebay. They're apparently not made anymore. Anyone know which Chemex filter I should use with this 4 cup?

I screwed up here. One would expect that a 4 cup Mellitta 4 cup brewer would take a #4 filter but I just checked and it is a #2 filter.

Chemex's 6 cup filter fits everything but their 3 cup brewer. The 3 cup brewer requires a different filter. So, the great question is, for a 4 cup brewer, should I use the 6 cup filter or the 3 cup filter?
I'm bumping this -- my brewer is on the way, and I'm still not sure whether to buy the "pint" (3-cup) filters or the 6-cup filters showing on the Chemex website. What's the diff between the two?
I understand I could cut the 6-cup filters, but wondering if the 3-cup filters will work as is.
I've also emailed Chemex, but no response yet.

As a former Chemex user I tried substituting a Melitta filter in the Chemex but didn't notice any improvement. Also I feel that the bottom seam of the Melitta filter might split and spill its contents due to stress from the lack of support along that seam, when used in the Chemex.
I have both the filters - the "half-moon" 3 cup and the "square" 6 cup.
I would bet that you could use the "half-moon" 3 cup. In the 3 cup size, it's extends deep into the carafe and I think it would fit nicely in the 4 cup. Both the 3 and 4 are very similar looking.
The 6 cup is a square filter and you would probably have to cut each one - that could be a pain..
To be 100%, call Chemex tomorrow: 1.800.243.6399 - I've found them to be very knowledgeable and personable and they would surely know.
