Posted Sun Feb 3, 2008, 8:37am Subject: My AeroPress Plunger Picture - this should make you giggle
Alan has said that the ideal weight for pressing coffee through the AeroPress is 15 pounds. After starting the P90X workouts recently, I decided to use my free-weights to test this out. As you can see by the attached photo, I've found that 20 pounds is about right for my needs - I think I grind a bit finer than most.
In my ideal world:
Areobie would come out with a 14 oz version of the aeropress so those of us not wanting an Espresso drink but just a good cup of coffee in a large mug or thermos could do it in one pass; and
Aerobie would come out with a companion weighted plunger so that we don't have to stand there for a minute slowly pushing down on the plunger.
As you can see from the picture, I have solved the 2nd problem with my 20 pound free weight.
This actually works - using the spatula and bean measure to keep the weight from rolling off. I need to balance the weight for a few seconds until it starts and then I just walk away, come back in a minute and the coffee is plunged. I've only had two accidents in the last year using this technique twice a day. Though its a bit of a pain having to shuttle the weight back and forth when I want to workout. I suspect that if I ever get married, my future wife won't want a 20 pound free-weight stored on the kitchen counter. But, hey, it works for now!
