Subject: FIRST POST: Looking at Newco AKH-TC

Hi folks,

I've been an occasional a lurker for years (every time a made a brewer decision), but finally decided to jump in for real this time around. What a great resource!

I have had some rough luck with brewers of late. My Bunn BTX brewed too darn fast and even with the low flow head never got hotter than 180 at the sprayhead. Weak coffee. Returned under warranty and re-sold on eBay. Picked up a Capresso ST600 right when they came out and paid full price~$250. Yikes, especially now that they can be had for $80 on eBay. Anyway, it brewed a great cup, but was an ergonomic disaster. Even worse, it completely died 15 months in and started popping breakers. Scary.

So at the moment, I am balancing a swiss gold filter in the opening of the thermal carafe from the ST600 and pouring boiling water from an electric kettle. Great coffee! LOL!

I am doing the typical Coffeegeek OCD routine of selecting my next brewer. I will get the Technivorm CD Thermo, or move up to a commercial model if I can find one that makes a decent cup and is not just optimized for speed. I am willing to spend some bucks to get a machine that will last me a decade. Looks are somewhat important.

I am intrigued by the Newco AKH-TC. My reasoning is this. It is NOT a water displacement like the AK-TC and all the Bunn's. This-according to their manual-means a slightly longer brewing cycle and hotter coffee. It also saves some energy since it only runs when brewing. On top of this, it can be had for ~$320 with thermal carafe. Not a huge step up from the TV. See it HERE.

What do the Coffeegeek experts think?

Thanks!
