Subject: Best Grind Setting for KitchenAid Pro Line Series Burr Mill...

I just bought a KitchenAid Pro Line Series burr mill (should get here within a week.)  I love the moka pot and Bodum French Press, and being sick of using a blade grinder I finally got something I think I will be happy with.  I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in since my topic doesn't exactly have to do with espresso but I am not sure where else to post it so here goes.  My question is, what is the best grind setting (for those who own this model) for french press with the kitchen aid burr mill?  Also, do you have any tips/tricks on initial setup/use etc.?  If someone could let me know what number of the dial makes the best grind or post pictures of what a good grind should look like, that would be really helpful.  This is my first real grinder and I am completely new to this stuff.  Any and all information will be helpful.

Thanks so much!

Eliot

I have been using that grinder for last 4-5 months for french press on 7 dial setting. (It goes from 1-8) 1 is finest and 8 is really coarse with big chunks of coffee beans in the grind.
Around 4 should be okay for drip but I havent tried drip yet.

That's interesting because in the first look of this grinder on coffee geek, the author wrote that he liked the 3 1/2 click setting.

Also, did you have any burr on burr contact when you first setup the unit?

3.5 seems very fine for french press to me, but that is a matter of taste. I dont like lots of sludge in my french press so I try to grind coarse. It could also be variations between grinders.

No, And I have tried to grind on finest setting and it went very well. Maybe still a little bit to coarse for espresso but its possible to adjust the range of 1-8 to get better tuning.

I used a setting of 3 and let it brew for 3 minutes.

On my grinder, I had a problem with the setting vibrating off. I found a large o-ring that would fit tight at the back of the dial (between the dial and the body). No problems other than that.

Picture below of the dial with the o-ring

Thanks paslug, good info about the o-ring.  I have an idea now of where I am going with this grinder.  Thanks everyone.  I think it will work out great for french press and moka pot coffee.  I am also looking into getting a Rancilio Silvia in about a year (I know it's a long ways out but with me moving out of state and a bunch of other things on my plate, it's a realistic guestimate of when I will actually own a Silvia.)  That said, can the kitchenaid pro line handle fine grinds enough for espresso or is it just not cut out for the job?  It would be nice if I didn't have to upgrade, but wanting good espresso, I'll do what it takes.

thanks,

Eliot

If you want good espresso get yourself a good espresso grinder & save the KA for press pot/drip.

Have you read through the KA manual & adjusted it to give the "Maximum Grind Fineness" as described on page 9? As the grinder is shipped it is usually set to the coarse side which on the lowest settings will give small wood chips!  I use my KA for Press Pot, Toddy & Finum filter brewing. Depending on which I'm doing I use #1-3.5.

I'm not sure which way is truly correct, but the manual states that 1 is coarsest and 8 is finest, contrary to the post above.

 The manual is correct.

Both of mine are modified but drip is around 4 1/2, vac pot around 3- 3 1/2, espresso between 7 and 8. Unmodified would be a slightly higher number for the same grind.
