I am based in the UK and I recently got a vacuum pot for my birthday. I don't think any manufacturers of vacuum pots are based in the UK although I may be wrong, so I got my device from a vendor that imports from Japan (I've got a Hario pot).
For the past couple of weeks I have been experimenting with brewing with this device with some great coffees (e.g. El Limoncillo). However I found myself prefering the taste of coffee from my french press, I believe it produces a richer cup with a greater body and also a greater depth/intensity of flavour. I find the vacuum pot to produce much cleaner cups of coffee that are lighter on the palate. I was wondering if people out there have found that same as me? I think I need to explore a greater range of coffees with my vac pot and I have a feeling that it may be more suited to very fruity and acidic coffee's and less so for coffees with chocolatey and caramel notes. Maybe the fact that there's not much crust/bloom in the vac pot brew (and that it's filtered out) makes this method cleaner than the press pot, and maybe the fact i'm using a cloth filter contributes to a clean cup rather than a press pot filter? Anyway I'm sure to have fun exploring this fun brewing method.

Nope, you're right. If you're not using the glass rod 'filter' on the vac pot, then your cloth or paper filter is indeed removing some oils and fine particulate matter that contributes to mouthfeel, and flavor.
I like using my vac pot, but I like my french press coffee more.

You could try a Cory glass filter rod. They are readily available on eBay. It fits in the Hario, although it isn't as easy to use as the cloth filter. It lets some sediment through, although not nearly as much as a press pot.
And of course the Cona pot referenced above comes with a glass rod.
Personally I like the cleaner cup of the vac pot with a cloth filter, and I use a cloth Hario filter even on the Cona. I guess it's a matter of taste and what you're used to. I also prefer lighter roasts, so maybe that too makes as difference as you suggested.
