Ok, I just purchased a used La San Marco SM-90A grinder from someone locally, and while it is running fine, I cannot seem to get the grind very fine. I noticed some ground coffee build up in the threads and cleaned it out in case it was geting the top burr stuck higher than it's lowest point, but it didn't seem to help much.

The burrs seem to have nice deep grooves in them, but after looking at the design further (I'm new to burr grinders) I'm starting to think the reason the burr surface is slanted is so it can keep breaking things up finer and finer as the particles move towards the outer edges from the center of the burrs. If this is the case, the surface out by the edges seems a bit flat and I'm not sure if that is a concern. I'm referring to the circled area in the picture. Does these look like old burrs?

Hi Jeff,

The area you pictured doesn't do any grinding of the beans at all, but by the look of the burr/s., they look worn & don't appear to be sharp at all. Who knows, there could be hundreds or a thousand lbs of beans through them..

Buy new ones. Link to my Rocky burr set & description in a minute. "Re: Rancilio Rocky First Look"

Try the "fingernail" test on them to find out how sharp or dull they really are. {;-)

I assume you have the La San Marco-90A with 64mm burrs?

Yes it has the 64mm burrs, and I would say it failed the fingernail test. Nail looked no different and the burr didn't even experience any friction. Looks like I need to order new ones.
