Every Virtuoso is calibrated differently so my #20 will be different grind coarseness than your #20. FWIW, for the rare times I use drip, #18 works for me, but again, this more than likely won't be correct for you. There's going to be some trial and error. If it seems then and watery you probably need to go finer. Likewise, if there considerable setiment and taste over extracted (bitter, acrid), then you need to go coarser. So the bottom line is the correct setting is the one that makes the coffee taste good to you :)

That surpirses me since the user guide that came with the coffee maker recommends a "fine or extra fine grind" But I will experiment with various settings. Thanks for the response

Fine or extra fine would be fine for a paper/Mellita style of filter whereas a medium/medium-fine goeth well with a SwissGold whose filtering pores are much larger.

As with any drip brewer, if the grind is too coarse what you get is the water passing quickly through it, with insufficient brewing time.
If you grind finer and finer (successive brews) the water will start to pond or puddle and drip through more slowly, so to provide a brewing time of 3 to 4 minutes. Half-way through pouring, the puddle of brewing coffee should be 3/4 up the filter.
Bear in mind that, if you grind too fine, or if your grinder is uneven with lots of fines (that block the pores in the paper) you could steep too long and get over-extraction, characterized by too sour/bitter unpleasant tasting coffee. And if your 'cup runneth over' ...that's also too fine.
