I'm new at this forum, and forgive me If I've missed a topic on the subject, I'd love it if it has been brought up if you could point me there. If not, I'd love some advice on a single serve coffee machine that doesn't require pods. I love to make my own decisions about what coffee I brew with out the restrictions of the 2 or 3 brands that fit my Senseo.
I've seen the machines that let you make your own pods, which are cool, but that seems to be a bit of an added pain. Are there any out there that you can just add a few table spoons in a filter of some sort, and then toss?
If you want a machine to both heat and pump water through the coffee, you can look for a Cuisinart SS1 single serve machine. These have been discontinued, but make very good coffee. They have had some reliability problems but you may be able to get one cheap.

I've also been eyeing up a Keurig with the idea of using my beans. I recently haave been in a situation where I have been able to experiment with a keurig and have been unimpressed. It's so simple to use and makes a fast cup but the coffee tastes so mediocre. Grinding into my Brew N Go is so far superior in terms of taste. I'm kind of bummed about it and have lost all interest in the Keurig at this point.
To be fair I have not tried the "my KCup" with my own beans but it's a very small basket and I can definately see that you would not be able to put the correct amount of grounds in it for 8-12 oz of water. I guess you would have to grind much finer to account for the lesser amount of grounds but you still have no room for the bloom. I've read about the weak coffee from Keurigs and I can visually see how that can happen. The Keurig is also designed to brew FAST...so it's a sacrifice.
The Keurig tends to produce a weaker yet drinkable cup of coffee that reminds me of what my mother would make which is definately Keurig's target audience. For a non-coffeegeek a Keurig is so perfect...it's fast, sturdy, clean, and makes the same tasting cup of coffee every time. But it is noticeably weak and one dimentional. I drink my coffee black and the Keurig begs me to add some cream and sugar to add some depth...if that makes any sense.

Thanks for all of the details. This is an active forum! Cheers. Yeah, I'm looking for something that heats, and either pumps or drips the water through. This machine will be for my Grandmother, so I'd like simplicity and taste to be the most important features. She was using a percolator, but was interested in making a change.

I suspect your GM would actually like the Keurig using the K-Cups. It is very convenient and easy, and with the right choices of K-Cups and cup size, will make a drinkable cup for her.
