I've been doing it and its much easier than stirring (no spoon to clean). I don't even go that far, but yeah thats the general idea, all the grounds are submerged for full brewing, then just press to filter.

Excuse my very late reply to this thread. I've tried every method out there and I find the way I do it pretty darn good.
Using 195F water, I start by pouring in a small amount of water to moisten and bloom the grounds. After 30 seconds, I pour in the rest of the water, making sure to thoroughly agitate the grounds (with the pouring water) in the press (pretty much like stirring). I use a scale and stop pouring when I hit the desired water weight. Total water/grounds contact time is 4 minutes for a larger press (8-12 cup) and 3 minutes for a 3-4 cup press.
I find if I stir at anytime, the grounds sink and I find that it decreases extraction.
