Subject: Eva Solo generations?

Hi, all. After a year of truly enjoying coffee brewed in my 0.6 L Eva Solo, I recently picked up an Eva Solo 1.4 L to use when serving guests. I haven’t tried out the new Eva Solo yet, but I wanted to go ahead and make a post about a small difference I noticed between it and my trusty 0.6 L unit since I haven’t seen the issue discussed elsewhere.

Note: for a thorough write-up on how this simple full-immersion brewing system works, I’ll refer you to Mark Prince’s authoritative review (with pics), which I doubt I’d be able to improve on.

To avoid confusion, I should briefly review how the Eva Solo’s parts come together before delivering the goods (advice: keep your expectations low).

The heart and soul of an Eva Solo is a fine metal mesh filter, which you insert into a glass carafe. [Fun fact: while the 1.4 L Eva Solo’s carafe is unsurprisingly larger than those of the smaller Eva Solos, its filter assembly is identical.] When it comes time to pour, you do so through an ingenious little lid that's seated in the metal cone of the filter assembly. Coffee flowing out causes the upper part of the lid to pivot on its rubber neck.

In a nutshell, the lids on my Eva Solos are different. Here's the view from the top (0.6 L on the left, 1.4 L on the right)...

And here's the view from the bottom (again, 0.6 L on the left, 1.4 L on the right)...

Do I think this lid-related difference between my Eva Solos will matter in the cup? Not really, but I suppose it's at least *possible* that the alternate lid designs might contribute to differences in flow, which in turn could affect aeration, etc., during the pour. We'll see. Thoughts?

One last thing: I've turned up pictures of 1.4 L Eva Solos online that feature the lid design on the left. So, which design came first, and when was the change made? Anyone know?

Bump with an update. I emailed Eva Solo A/S (in Denmark) more than a week ago and haven't heard back. A few shops in my not-so-humongous city alone brew using Eva Solos, so I know I'm not the only one who's familiar with this brewer. Come to think of it, I should ask their baristas which lid style their Solos came with...

Ok, I've heard from a few people I know at LAMILL and Spro in Baltimore. Below I'll give a quick summary of what I learned.

First, terminology: let's call the lid style on the left in the above pics "star" and the style on the the right "lotus."

Jay Caragay at Spro reports that the Evas at his shop have both lid styles, and furthermore that the star lid came with the older, sweatered Evas (pictured below; source) while the lotus lid came with the newer Evas featuring neoprene jackets (as shown above in the first post). IIRC Spro has 1.0 L Evas.

Lindsay Wailes at LAMILL reports that their 0.6 L Evas all have lotus lids.

Putting this all together, here's what we get AFAICT:

Eva Solo gen. 1: Sweater, star lid
Eva Solo gen. 2 (transitional?): Neoprene jacket, star lid
Eva Solo gen. 3: Neoprene jacket, lotus lid

Thanks Josh for the really nice comparison write-up! It really tempted me to try'em. I did a quick search on the net and it seems that the price for Eva Solo is on the high range. That's probably that's why not many people has had experience with them. Do you have any recommendation/tips where to get them?

Sure thing! Right, I wish they weren't so expensive. Evas show up on eBay from time to time; that's where I got my 0.6 L. I have Prima Coffee to thank for my 1.4 L, which I got a nice discount on during their Black Friday sale.
