Hello ALL: Well, I just bought a new grinder. Since the Maestro Plus has been replaced, I bought the New Encore Model. I will get it delivered in a few days and will use it with my French Press. My question is if you really think it is necessary to grind, and then throw out, 4 oz of coffee in order to clean/season the new grinder. It just seems wrong to throw out coffee that we spend $20+ per pound on!
That is what I thought but I looked at their online manual and they say to run 1/4 lb. of coffee thru it and that will clear out any of the manufacturing "stuff" in there and also season the Burrs. Actually, I use a French Press and can not imagine drinking anything bad. I will wash the Input and Output of the New Grinder. I guess I can also remove the Burrs and brush them, but I just can not imagine having to grind 1/4 lb. of coffee and then throwing it out!

The first few cups of coffee from my new Preciso grinder (straight out of the box) had a horrible chemical taste. I'm sure it was manufacturing oil on the burrs. I ground and tossed some old beans I had laying around and never had that weird taste again. Take care!

Maybe just don't spend $20 a pound on the coffee that you're going to throw out. If you don't have some leftover stale decaf or something, just pick up a 1/4lb from the grocery store dispensers, instead of worrying about whether or not to invest that 1/4 of $20 on your new grinder.
I would tell you about grindz, but it's just as expensive as your coffee, & using minute rice works, but gets mixed reviews as to whether it's too hard on your burrs.

OK, OK...I get it! :-)
Well, no past its prime coffee around here! Anyway, I get it, I will grind 1/4 lb. A new Wal-Mart Grocery only store opened here and perhaps I can get some whole bean 8 o'clock. That is not too bad and should be well under $10 per pound!

So rather than just tossing 1/4 pound of your $20/lb coffee through the grinder you are going to drive and pick up a $10/lb coffee to season the burrs? So rather than being out $5, you will be out $10 with 3/4 of a pound of bad coffee in the cupboard. Don't over think everything so much!

Well, we wanted to go to the new store anyway. However, my wife had to pick up something at Whole Foods and we bought a 14oz 3 beans coffee for $4.99. That is a better deal. :-) Anyway, I wanted to try that anyway. Not expecting much for coffee that works out to be $5.70 per pound! :-) Anyway, my new grinder should be here in a few hours via UPS.
