Hello all,
I was just given an 8cup French Press. Except with company, I only expect to brew between 1-3 cups for myself. My question is this: Will brewing less than 8 cups in that size french press distort the quality of the brew? I measured out one cup and it seemed a bit low, but 2-3 cups looks like more than enough water in this large canister. Then again, I want to check with the pros before I ruin perfectly good Intelligentsia coffee...

Brewing less in a French Press won't usually affect the quality, though if you brew super small amounts then you will experience significant temperature drops during brewing.
Keep in mind that the "cups" that coffee devices go by are not true 8oz cups. Is your French press made by Bodum? A Bodum cup is 4.25oz.

For an 8-cup FP, I usually use around 58g-66g for a full press, adjusted to taste, and about 30g-33g for a half-full (4 cup). I've never felt that there was any degradation to the final product by only filling halfway (as long as you properly preheat everything to make sure you don't lose temp).
