is there a compelling reason to have more than one chemex? Currently, I have both the eight cup glass handle and hand blown 8 cup. Are these redundant? The eight cup hand blown is really closer to the ten cup classic model. Neither function well for the small nuber of times I want a singel 12 ounce serving or can this be done?

If I found myself in your shoes, I'd probably look to swap the 8 cup handled model for a 6 cup. It safely brews a full liter of coffee, but is still useful for half as much, or even less. The same filters will fit, and you could even get a KONE or a nice cloth filter for changing things up a bit.
I find the 3 cup awkward, but some folks have great luck with it.
