Well... I've ended up ordering the Technivorm KBTS. I figured that as long as it makes a really good cup of coffee (which I trust it will), I can forget about the price after a couple of months of use. Overall I just appreciate its design, solid reputation and size. I also really like its ability to manually adjust the drip to halfway, since I will rarely be making more than 2-3 cups at a time.
So... it's set for delivery on Tuesday, I'm looking forward to it! I also decided to supplement my purchase with the Clever Coffee Dripper... for $18 it just seems like such a nice convenience item.
Thanks for everyone's input and recommendations!
PS: It also feels strangely gratifying to toss in the garbage these leftover K-Cups that I never got around to (mainly decaf ones). I am really looking forward to some real coffee!

Sorry to chime in so late, I just found this forum.
I have been using the KBTS for a few years now (with the old carafe) and it makes great coffee; also had a reason to take it apart, and found out that it works exactly like other home brewers, there is NO heat+hold tank; their secret is that the powerful heating element is able to bring up the temperature to where it should be. It does hold a small amount of residual COLD water to enable a float-switch to detect the drop in water level and switch-off the heating element. This is a good safety measure but it comes at a cost: Since some cold water is present in the system all the time, you need to drain it when you go away or stop using the machine for more than a few days. If you leave the water inside it may grow algae, which happened to me during a vacation... this may depend on temp and sunlight, but it is obviously possible. (cleaning was no fun) I also keep all covers off after brewing, to dry all other surfaces.
