Hi, I am not a coffee fanatic, but I really love a good cup of coffee! I have been using a french press for a while, and recently started using a toddy to brew coffee. I am also thinking of getting a chemex or clever at some point. I have always bought ground beans, but I just started buying whole beans. I bought a super cheap burr grinder on amazon, but the grind is ridiculously inconsistent, and coarse is pretty fine. I have no plans to make espresso. I am pretty sure this has been asked a million times but I can't find it anywhere. Given a budget of $100, are there any good grinders that will do a good, consistent, coarse grind to medium grind?

Under 100 for your needs (not espresso), I'd say the Capreso Infinity 560, Breville 450XL, and you may find a cheap Baratza Maestro on Ebay or on Baratza's site under refurbs.

Both the Baratza Maestro + (or newer Encore) or the Infinity would be fine for you. I'm own Baratza grinders, thus no experience with the capresso, though many seem quite satisfied. I'd also recommend you go to Baraza.com and see what refurbs they have. The warranty is the same, and their Customer service is as good as it gets.

This thread in the link is a little dated (January 2011) but many models discussed are still available. I picked up a used Cuisinart conical burr which I do like. I ended up researching this same topic since so little is written about less than expensive grinders. I like Baratza too, but right now they are not in the sub-$100 market.

Try as I might, I have not been able to find and Baratza's in my price range. I could get a very good refurb one from their site, but with shipping it comes out to about $165.
Well, it looks like I only have 2 or 3 options, unless I throw more money at the problem....

For NON espresso grinding, you might find a deal on a used Solis 166 also knows as the Starbucks Barista grinder. I have one I use for travel and it can represent a very good bargain in the used market.

keep an eye on Ebay... I've seen the Maestro go cheap on there. Same with the other's, do searches for the brand or model, like Baratza, or Baratza Maestro, and check off to save those searches. You'll automatically get emailed when new stuff matches what you've searched for. If you have a Bed Bath & Beyond near you, you can sign up and get their 20% coupon and use it towards a grinder, no Baratza, but they do carry pretty much all the normal store brand stuff like Breville etc. If no BBB you should still be able to sign up and get the coupon and lot's of other stores will match them off it (I know Williams Sonoma, and Sur La Table by me will)
Or check Amazon, great prices and generally cheap shipping, though I have a Prime account so get free two day shipping on anything. Any of the others mentioned here though and on that other link are more than enough for your needs since your doing no espresso.

I went with a virtuoso/preciso, but lately have been wishing I,d have spent less on an OE Lido and/or Burrmeister 1200. More consistent grind for less money, provided you're at the appropriate fraction of a turn past zero, & your alignment is where it should be etc.

Yeh, plus if there's not a BBB by you, I believe you can still sign up and get the coupon and other retailers will match. Only trick is BBB will make you pay for shipping even to the store if it's not carried in stock (which a lot of the coffee stuff isn't, I've never seen the Smart Grinder at the store even with it's high demand). But people have gotten them to agree to free shipping, or had another place like Sur La Table match the 20% and do free shipping as well (seems to be luck of the straw on shipping).
If you can get the Smart Grinder for 160 or so, that is a killer grinder for the price, motor isn't as strong as my Preciso, but it looks cool as hell and electronic adjustment is awesome. Plus you can still shim the new ones with the updated burrs so you have more "steps" for espresso. But for the OP needs, there's a bunch under 100 that are fine.
