So looking at picking up a Vac Pot but quickly realized I will need a second grinder as I can't be emptying my grinder I use for espresso. Contemplating going with a hand grinder to use for my Vac pot as I will likely use for company or on weekends only not everyday so speed is not super important. Figure if I'm picking up something more manual why not go all the way and use a hand grinder as well. First question..Do you think that is a good combination? And if so..Looking at the Peugeot Bresil? Thoughts on that machine? Will likely just go with a Bodum or Yama stovetop vac pot.

Hmm, not sure. I'm playing around with a vac pot right now (Yama 5-cup stovetop), and my understanding is that these things do best when brewing full pots. That's a dose of 42 g. or so for the 5-cup, which is significantly more than what I usually grind by hand. I'm not saying that it would be hard to crank out this amount--just borderline time-consuming. I don't know anything about the Peugeot, but you'll want to make sure you get a fairly consistent grind if you're going to be using a glass rod to filter in order to avoid stalls.

So that was one of my concerns. Never really used a hand grinder before, how long are we talking to crank out 42g to medium/medium fine? I'm ok with it being a little bit of work.

Probably about 90 sec. with the OE LIDO, the only manual grinder I own. It's not particularly fast.

Well I'm going to give it a go. Ended up buying a Yama 5 cup stovetop and a Cory glass filter. Went a little cheaper on the hand grinder. Hario Canister C. Gets great reviews and reports to have a consistent grind. Figured I can always find a use or 2 for it even if it turns out to be too slow for the vac pot. Thx for the advice.

That's faster than OE claims -- they say 60 seconds for 20g.
Is the OE estimate conservative or have you been lifting weights?

Ha! Probably the former, though I do have several months worth of LIDO grinding under my belt. That estimate is based on a test run I did back in March. I was aiming for about 2 turns/sec., which feels pretty comfortable. At a drip grind setting (1 turn CCW from zero), 20 g. took me 43 sec.

Thanks for the feedback. I covet the LIDO, but it's a little too big for my needs (portability) and I like keeping my life simple (one grinder). But maybe I'll eventually get it anyways, just for home, as it's so much better than my current hand grinder. I usually grind 22g, finer than drip (nevermind press). It takes me about 2 minutes. But it depends. Darker roasts are softer and easier to grind. Lighter roasts "catch" with my grinder. Some are really a struggle and I get pumped. Does the LIDO suffer from this as well or is it designed better?

It's not immune from the occasional catch, but powering through light-roasted beans isn't difficult IMO.
