all in the comfort of your own home.  Starbucks has now entered the realm of single serve pod coffee:

The same high-quality Arabica coffee you love from Starbucks—roasted, ground and packed fresh in Verismo™ pods. All ready to brew perfectly at home whenever you’re in the mood.

Rich, true Starbucks espresso. At your fingertips.
The Verismo™ System uses high-pressure Swiss engineering to bring you true Starbucks espresso at home, anytime. Deep flavor, rich crema and all of the complexity of the espresso shots we pull in our coffeehouse.

About $1 per serving, and the choice of colors, it's a $200 version of a Keurig.  And it gives you AUTHENTIC ESPRESSO!!!1!11!!!1

(there's also the "professional" machine for $400 - looks like it has a larger water reservoir with a filter).

Just hearing about this now, Steve? If anyone's actually interested in the details or reviews, here's a good thread to check out.

I tried 3 Verismo brews while at the mall yesterday; results as follows:

  1. Latte brewed using Starbucks Espresso Roast at Williams-Sonoma on a Verismo 585 (the deluxe model): Phew, that powdered milk takes some getting used to! Has a lingering crackery taste. Not for me.
  2. Espresso brewed using Starbucks Espresso Roast at W-S on a Verismo 585: Better. I wasn't blown away, but the shot was acceptable by single-serve standards.
  3. Veranda Blend brewed coffee made at Sur La Table on a Verismo 580: Better than expected, though not something I'd crave.

We established over on ssc that the Verismo is a rebadged K-Fee machine. It's even labeled as such.

Actually, yes.  It's the first time I noticed it - because the local *$s just got the machine in (and the little booklet that describes how you can have your own *$s in your home!).  Before that, I really have paid little attention to K-cup brewing other than the checks I've done.  IMHO the sample shot of espresso was not even close to the superauto machine results (I didn't have my refractometer on me, but I don't know the espresso pod dose anyway, and I'm not an espresso drinker really).

The Verismo doesn't take k-cups (though Starbucks offers those as well). Verismo capsules are actually almost identical to CBTL capsules. In fact, the Verismo can brew CBTL capsules, according to people who've tried. Anyway, AFAIK the dose is ~8 g.

Also, the "per cup" price that they were advertising at Williams Sonoma where I tried them was way off. They were serving up the lattes and saying it was about 80 cents a cup.

A little simple in-store math showed me that the espresso pods were a dollar each, and each latte used two milk pods which were also almost a dollar each.

SO, about $3 a cup to use the new Verisimo machine.... not really cheaper than actually going into the shop. It's a pure at-home convenience thing.

The quality of the drinks was passable I suppose, but certainly nothing I'd be proud of. My wife and I both tasted it and shrugged. Now that we've been spoiled by my Gaggia I think we'd frown instead- certainly not even close to the same level of drinks.
