Went prowling the local thrift stores in the glass vase sections for a used Chemex.

The first one I went to, there... sitting in the vase section was a beautiful Chemex with what looked like a wood-like center wrap and a leather thong.  I was excited - only $5!

Then, I picked it up and the top... wobbled.  Uh-Oh.  Sure enough, it was cleanly broken (and attempted to be repaired) at the neck - no good for me.

I did find a backup 350ml cup that matched my everyday mug for 50 cents... and moved on to the next store.

I wandered in and nothing in the vase section, in the appliance section was a DeLonghi L'espresso for $7.99 - but I passed on that.  Wandered down the aisle, thinking about getting one of the thermal pots when I saw her, sitting there.  Black.  Intact carafe...

$4.99 for a Gevalia Kaffe/Melitta BCM-4CB.  NICE!  It's in great shape.

So, no lo-cost Chemex, but I did score another decent 24oz brewer.

Nice find!  I always turn up empty handed for the most part except I did get an air pot for $3 once.

You are looking at a 10 cup Chemex.

I was looking for an old press pot or even a $4 moka pot.  I always check the glassware aisle and today found nothing.

However, as I was looking at the areas where knicknacks and vases were, it called to me.  Or the artificial plant stuck in it did.

LOL

The price tag - you can't read it in the picture, but it say $2.99

:D

I may get the wooden collar for it.  We'll see.  Now I'm wishing I had bought the broken one I saw earlier.

Excellent score, I once found an eight cup Chemex at a thrift store and didn't hesitate.

Since I've broken two Chemexes (including my thrift store score) I have two wood collar sets extra, I'd be willing to post one to you if you like if you cover shipping... just email me if you want to work out the details.

Just on a whim, I stopped at a Goodwill store I was passing by, and found a couple more neat items:

-A 10-cup carafe with a flat bottomed basket pourover.

and the weirdest thing - the bottom of a moka pot with what looks like a valved pressure nozzle.  I think it is a Moka pot stovetop steamer.  I bought a moka pot but returned it - but I figured if I came across another one for less than $5, I'd pick it up.

Sum total: $5.35.

I also found the remains of some sort of siphon brewer - but without the upper globe, it is unusable and it had a chip in the neck, so I passed.  Also, found something I never saw before - a Melitta 1,2,3 spresso.  I think it was made by Salton - for $8.  Passed on that, I just don't feel right buying an "espresso" maker for $8 ROFLOL!

It looked like it used some sort of pod - nothing looking like a portafilter.

Still looking for that discarded Ditting KR804 for $15.  ;D

I scored a 12-cup Vesuviana at the Goodwill warehouse (or whatever it was) a couple of months ago...they charged by *weight*. $4 and some change, but it didn't have the pot. I bought a set of gaskets from orpahnespresso, and a pot off ebay (turned out to be a 9-cup...my bad), and cleaned it up. Worked nicely.

Picked up another BCM-4CB.  They're like Fieros - you can't just have one or two, apparently.  It too was $4.99.

Found half a neopolitan flip, and passed on a $4 aluminum Drip-o-lator.  It's kinda fun - never know what you might find.

I  stopped picking them up after finding three - one made in China, one in Hong Kong (used to be a separate entity), and one made in Mexico. All work the same for me.

I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?

A huge thanks and a shout out to Chris' generosity.

I introduce my new/used low-cost 10 cup Chemex.
