So I was able to replace the cold water reservoir on my KBT741 easy enough and my first pot didn't really "wow" me. However I wasn't putting in enough coffee and once I measured it and refined the grind a bit that first cup was a whole new world.
My remaining question is regarding the fine sediment which resides in the last 1/4 cup in the carafe and slightly the cups themselves (similar to a french press). Is there a way to remedy this or is it just part of package?
I'm using a Frieling (swiss gold) gold filter and do stir the grounds a bit once the grounds are saturated. The only thing I was thinking is beause the permenant filter doesn't sit on the bottom of the brew basket since one side has a flat part but watching it during the cycle it never overflowes out of the swiss gold filter so I don't think that's an issue.
Either that or your grinder may be producing too many fines. Some dust is unavoidable and will wind up in the brew if you don't use a paper or cloth filter. A grinder with larger burrs will usually produce fewer fines.
You should think about using a paper filter. In my experience you will get the best cup that way. I'd also think about a coarser grind if you are getting greater than 6-7 min brew times. I use a little coarser than recommended but more coffee (about 75 grams). I stir after the first 15 seconds with the brew basket off for about 30 seconds (so 45 seconds total until I let the brew basket release coffee). By using more coffee with a coarser grind I can get a strong cup but have the coffee move through the system quicker. Works for me.
