Apologies...I should've looked more closely at the subject line (thermal carafe). Wow, maybe I need to drink less coffee! Anyway, I can confidently say that for those with the glass carafe, the manual says it is ok to use in dishwasher.

Apparently just washing the thermal carafe by hand can result in a surprise. I was rinsing out the carafe today and the glass inside suddenly exploded....it sounded like a pistol went off! Thank goodness the shattered glass remained inside the carafe and didn't explode all over the kitchen and me! I've only used the machine for a couple of months and I was fairly happy with it. I've used other glass lined carafes for years and never have I had one explode like this one did. I've done some searching and I don't intend to pay $50 for a replacement. Has anyone found a different carafe, other than the glass one, that will work with this machine?

Hot glass, cold water? I've done this…once. If that's not the case, maybe there was some pressure/stress from the outer stainless steel onto the glass, and it couldn't handle much of a temperature change. Try calling the company. Unless you ask, the answer is always no. Take care! Jim

Carafe was not hot....last used the day before and only a small amount of liquid remained inside it. The water from the tap was warm but not hot. Warranty information states "fragile parts like glass are excluded from the warranty". I may call and give it a shot but not expecting a positive outcome.

When you call, be sure to use the word "EXPLODED" a few times, loud noise, maybe flying glass, hands near by, etc. after explaining that it was cold when you washed it. It's not like you dropped it or something, your just washed it! The moonroof on my 09' Nissan Murano literally exploded one day while driving down the highway. No other cars around, no over passes, etc. Just a loud bang and little little pieces of glass falling all over me. Dealer determined there was stress on the glass and replaced it, even out of warranty. It's worth a try. Take care! Jim

Just an update. Bonavita seems to think I must have been at fault for the carafe "implosion" (their word) since I had been using it for several months. The best they will offer me is a replacement at half price which will be $25. I suppose I will accept the offer since the machine is useless without a carafe. Strange, I have another glass lined carafe I have used for years that I didn't break yet. Oh well.

Haha. I searched for Bonavita carafe explosion and found this thread. My 1800TH is less than 3 months old. This morning, I brewed a pot of coffee and let it sit for a few minutes. When I opened the carafe, it literally exploded. Coffee and small shards of glass all over my kitchen table and floor. The plastic base of the carafe had actually separated from the stainless housing. I'm strongly considering filing a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This could have been quite dangerous. I took a couple pictures and sent them in an email to Bonavita customer service. I know they claim not to cover glass breakage, but this appears to be a catastrophic equipment failure. I'll update when I get a reply. (Click for larger image)

Would someone please tell me, if you have the thermal version, MUST the carafe interface with the basket, or would the coffee still drip with a shorter, glass pot under there?

The basket sits on top of the carafe. There is no interlock to ensure either the basket or the carafe is in place, so the answer to your question is yes, provided you can find a pot the basket will fit into/onto.

I had a similar problem with the exploding thermal carafe. Have had this coffee maker for about three weeks and was lightly wiping out the inside of the carafe with a plastic handled scrubber, but not by any means using much force, and the thing made a sound like shot and all the glass shattered. I was shocked. I found some reviews that reflect this phenomena... so it must be a design problem. It's too bad, I thought I was on to a good thing with this coffee maker.
