I know you reference the "I want study glass", however you may wish to give a look at the old all stainless Nicro vacuum coffee maker. I have one (have had it for years) and find it to make exceptional vacuum coffee. And no fear of breakage.

I've got a bit of a collection of these - all glass ones - all very well made, but I wouldn't call any of them sturdy. The shape of the top globe in particular makes it prone to damage with careless handling. Most current models have replacement glass available though.
All of mine are 1950's or more recent, but you might find some older ones - especially in the US - were made of much thicker glass before the more modern processes of making strong thinner glass were commercialised. Either that, or Len's suggestion of a metal one.
