I agree.. You can lead a horse to the other side of the road for water but a pig can't fly south for the winter to Capistrano with Punxsutawney Phil. And that makes as much sense as a grinder built into a brewer. Sort of a trailer park super auto... I think
I does make you wonder when there are some that sell for around $95, less than the price of an entry-level decent grinder (discounting hand grinders). if he cares about the quality of the coffee, try to educate him. If convenience is key, it won't matter much- I would shop with warranty and convenience of service and returns in mind.
One issue with this kind of machine is that steam from the brewing process condenses along the pathway to, and in, the grinding area. It's difficult to clean the old stuff out, and to get it dry for the next grind-brew.
