I think it's a lemon. I tinkered with temperature, grind, cleaning it, adjusting it, etc., etc. Nothing worked. I think the little "top hat" is top heavy.

If the feed tube from the grinds holder to the top of the collecting pot is obstructed (metal flash, coffee debris, dirt,  corrosion) then you may be building too much pressure before the extract is coming into the upper pot, giving you the explosive release of liquid and steam. If it were overly-compacted grinds, I think you might get channeling as you might with a portafilter with the same.

Brought my gring down to about a 2 on my Virtuoso. And everything seems to be working much better. I guess I needed a much finer grind than I thought I would. I have 2 brews down now with coffee that made it into the upper chamber.
