After 5 years, 4 months, 3 days and literally thousands of shots of espresso, my Sirena has died. Its probably not completely dead, my guess is the boiler is all gummed up since the pump seems to be pumping away without any output. Since I only payed 250, I kind of feel like I got my moneys worth and now Im looking to upgrade to something a bit more sophisticated. It was actually a pretty good machine. Came to temperature quickly, really produced a nice shot of espresso after messing with the beans and grind (even if the auto tamping and build in creme disc made it so easy a monkey could do it) frothed milk with ease, and pumped out water just hot enough for a quick cup of tea. So I guess what Im looking for is suggestions. Here's my criteria
- Under $1000, preferably around the 500 mark - Super autos seem to take all the fun out. Internal grind and tamp gives ya no wiggle room. Plus I spent 200 on a burr grinder that is in its prime. So I think Im looking for at the auto/semi auto category - Frothing power is a plus as the miss's loves her lattes/caps and froth is my secret ingredient in my award winning hot chocolate (awards dispensed by my children)
SO where does that leave me? Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I also had a Sirena and it went bad in a few years. I bought a Rancilio Silvia and It is so much better that the Sirena. The learning curve is a little steeper but worth the effort. I had a problem with the grinder (also from Starbucks) but bought a Baratza Priciso and am happy with it so far. I bought both the Rancilio and the baratza from first in coffee and saved on sales tax.
