Hi,

I am new to the forum and came here searching for educated opinions on what best to replace my Capresso Coffee Luxe which I have never been happy with and whose burr grinder has given out after a year and a half.  I have read through all the reviews and many forum threads and believe I have narrowed it down to two machines the Technivorm or the Moka Brew.

I just like a strong, flavourful, full bodied, aromatic cup of coffee from a good medium roast coffee. The difference in price between the two machines isn't a deciding factor.  I would appreciate any insight anyone can give me between the brew from one machine to the other, especially if anyone has tried both.

Thank you all for a great site and your input.

That's pretty much how I like my coffee. I can't speak to the Technivorm, but we've had a Krups Moka Brew since April and it makes the best coffee I've ever personally made. It's somewhat fussy to set up and it takes a few brews to get the proper grind/tamping/coffee-to-water/etc for that perfect cup, but I've never had a bad cup of coffee from it.

You'll find a nice review of the KMB here.

“And what flavor would you like in your coffee, sir?”
“You don’t understand. I Just want a cup of Joe.”

I can speak about both coffee makers...but understand, these are "my opinions", and I do not consider myself an expert on matters of coffee. In an earlier post on this thread, I mentioned that I was addicted to coffee makers, and so I purchased a Techivorm Thermaljug...it makes very nice coffee. I returned it to Boyd Coffee Co. this morning. They were very nice. If your main consideration is SPEED of brewing, then by all means go with Technivorm...it's the fastest machine I have ever seen. Again, in my opinion, my Krups Moka Brew makes terrific coffee...no muss, no fuss...but not much in the way of speed...and for us that is not an issue. As far as sitting on the hot plate that is not an issue either, as we finish the coffee well within 15 minutes...last cup same as first. If it is necessary to leave it longer then a good thermos is the way to go. Since you say price is not important we need not go there. You would like "strong, flavorful, full bodied coffee"...Krups gets my vote.

I do not own a Technivorm, but I do have a Melitta Clarity which is a very accurate knock-off of the Technivorm. I have owned a Krups Moka Brew but returned it to the seller. I have been hooked on specialty coffee for 25 years and have owned many different types of brewing devices. I had high hopes for the KMB when it arrived. However, it was just too inconsistent for me. It is a well made machine and seems to function as designed, but it reminded me why I threw out the moka pot 20 years ago. On the other hand, the Melitta Clarity makes a great pot of coffee and comes very close to duplicating the Melitta/Chemex pour over. I would consider how much work you want to put into your daily cup. The Technivorm/Melitta Clarity will be quite easy. The KMB will require alot of effort and a very large learning curve for what in my mind is not a superior cup. I would rather put my time and effort into roasting top quality beans. That is the foundation for an excellent cup of coffee.

I appreciate all the input, you all don't make this an easy decision.

Forgive my ignorance, besides liking a a good cup of coffee I am very green about all of the ways to get there.  How is it the Technivorm can achieve a great tasting cup of coffee, after all the disparaging things I have read about drip coffee makers on this site?  That is essentially what it is, isn't it?

Yes Technivorm is a drip maker. It does brew at the correct temperature, but you can do the same with a manual pour over which is a lot cheaper ($200 vs about $10).  I use to do and still do occasionally manual style because I can exactly control the all the variables  better even any autodrip. BUT...

KMB can give you a better brew than any drip IMO. But you must be willing to experiment a little to get it right. Once you get the grind/tamp/quantity down correctly it can give very good results consistently.

If you really want better coffee get freshly roasted beans and get a good burr grinder first.

If you really want an expert opinion regarding the Krups Moka Pot, go to CoffeeGeek Reviews, and Mark Prince will give you  excellent, knowledgeable information. Also, stopping to think about it, the fact that Technivorm is the fastest machine around, to me shows it doesn't spend much time with the coffee grounds...just a thought.

For a 6 cup Technivorm pot there's a water/coffee contact time of 3minutes 30 seconds. For that small amount of coffee, with high turbulence and temperature, surely it brews fast but NOT too fast. The Technivorm extracts a lot, and more evenly than other home brewers I've seen.

The Technivorm if utilized correctly can produce a very good extraction and brew, if you're looking for the clarity of drip.

I was in your exact same situation about two weeks ago, and decided on the
Technivorm. Although I have never tried coffee brewed with the KMP, I do not
regret purchasing the Technivorm. If quantity and quality are important, the
Technivorm delivers. I bought the Clubline with the glass carafe, and decant
the remaining brew into a thermos type container. I don't have time to make
several pots of coffee on weekday mornings, and the Technivorm brews just
the perfect amount for my fiancee' and I. The coffee is strong, flavorful, and
robust every time with very little learning curve.
