No, not as far as I know.

It's generally frowned upon as it uses overheated (boiling) water and over-extracts the coffee (multiple-extractions)

YES! I enjoy percolated coffee sometimes. I think it's an unjustly maligned brewing method.

I use light to medium roast coffee whenever I percolate.

The only trouble I have with percolating is getting the coffee grind just right. If the grind is too coarse, I get no flavor at all. Too fine, and I get sludge in the cup.

I haven't used a perculator for about one year when someone posed a question about them.  At that time I dredged out my old Corning-ware perculator and did a brew-off against my press pot.  I posted the results.
If I can find it I will bump it so you can have a look.

I haven't seen many people on this site talk about perc, but I bet fresh, home roasted beans, at the right grind will result in pretty good percolated coffee.  Why don't you use your perc and find out.  Inquiring minds want to know.  IMHO, fresh beans will have a greater impact on your coffee quality than the type of machine you use.

You came to the right place...

For a great & hot cup of coffee that won't break the bank... consider a manual drip method.  You can buy a plastic filtercone for less than $15 (see sweet marias) and brew it into a carafe which you can get at wal-mart for a few bucks.  Alternatively, you can make your own for a few dollars using a food funnel (also at wal-mart), a chemex filter, and a rubber band.  I have both and my wal-mart special is every bit as good as the filtercone.   The general rule of thumb is using water just off boil (195-205 degrees)...

Make sure you pre-heat the carafe with hot water first...

Does anyone else think that perked coffee is mayhem in a pot? I mean, you put this delicate organic compound in a basket and suspend it above violently boiling water. While waiting for the contraption to 'perk', time and heat take their toll of the fragrant volatile oils and aromatic compounds in the coffee. Then like Vesuvius erupting water at 212 degrees drenches what is left of the coffee leaching out bitter compounds as well as what is left of the good stuff.

Compare that with a press pot. A gentle bath, a warm soak in not quite boiling water. With no open flame anywhere under the coffee.

decide-0-matic for brewing. You are captured by hungry cannibals you pray that they will:

  1. Put you in a pot of rapidly boiling water
  2. Take the water off the fire, let it cool a bit and allow you to soak

Treat your fellow organic compounds as you want to be treated. '-))
