Subject: The Best Drip Coffee Maker?

Well, I've got this friend, see?  And he's a real coffee nut -- well, he's not willing to admit he's a coffee geek just yet, but he'll walk a couple of miles early in the morning to go to a good coffee place.

He's tasked me to find him a great drip coffee maker that makes a great cup of coffee.  He's gone through several, including a Bunn and Cuisinart, and still isn't happy.  He likes the idea of a shower head, and therefore is against getting the Technivorm (even though the absence of one may contribute to its proper brew temp.)

I don't know much about drip, as I prefer espresso.  Does anyone have any suggestions for the ultimate drip machine (to let me get back to pulling shots!)?

Thanks,

Michael

well "your friend"  might want to look into the capresso MT500, that a lot of people say is a good machine:

There is no one machine that everyone agrees is the best.

The home machines I've seen recently recommended most frequently are, in no particular order:

- Technivorm
- Capresso MT500
- Bunn
- Krups Moka Brew (technically not drip, but often lumped in this category)
- Melitta Clarity, with spray head mod (inexpensive Technivorm knock-off)

There are probably a couple of others I'm forgetting.

The other contenders for best drip are the manual methods, press pot, vacuum pot, Chemex, and Melitta.

For each of these you will find experienced people who claim it's the best machine or method they've ever had, and others who disagree.

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

I agree with this list.  While I don't own any of these, they have received the best reviews that I know of.  The only one I can add to the list (for getting good reviews in the under $50 category)... would be a Kitchen Aid model (don't know the exact model #).  I think it is discontinued, but can be found at some Lowes for $39.

While these require a little more work than drip... they make excellent coffee and nice for weekend brewing:

- Manual Drip (various funnels or filtercones / Chemex)
- Vacuum Pot (Bodum Santos/Yama)
- Electric Vac Pot (eStantos/B&D Infuze)

I can only give you my opinion on the Capresso MT500.

Having spent the last 15 years "getting by" with Mr. Coffee grade drip machines, if finally got feed up and bought for quality. Yes it was a little expensive but the results are fantastic. I can honestly say it makes the best drip coffee I have tasted anywhere! It is well built, functional and looks good to boot.  If there is anything else that is better, I would love to see how they compare.

I own a Melitta Clarity and think it produces an exceptional cup.  Plus, it was only $33 at QVC.com, so even if you don't like it, you could probably hock it on e-bay for more than you paid.  :-)   I should point out that I am mainly an espresso drinker, though, and rarely delve into the world of drip.

A shower head pipe can be purchased for the Technivorm from Boyd's, but I prefer the one-hole pipe and stirring the coffee. The Technivorm is by far the
best drip machine I have ever owned.  For those who have said it has a saturation problem I just don't see it.

I have gone through a number of lower to middle class drip machines.  The last I had was from Starbucks (the Aroma Grande), which produced a good coffee into a stainless carafe.  However, it simply took too long to brew a pot (~9 minutes for the full 10 cups).  Recently, I purchased a Bunn Home unit for 90 bucks at Dillards, and I LOVE IT.   I've had outstanding coffee every morning, and a the whole pot brews in right at 3 minutes.

I've not had any problems with it, period.  Some complain of the tendency for it to lose water volume, which I have noticed (but only when I go a day without using it, which is rare).  The easy way to compensate for this is to pour about 10.5 cups of water into the machine every morning (fill the carafe to the lip), and presto: you get exactly 10 cups of coffee.

Nothing fancy, the Bunn, but a heck of a drip machine.

I have to agree with eyedoc.  I went through several cheap drip brewers before I purchased my Bunn (at the recommendation of my father who used to sell them commercially) and I've never been happier.

  1.  It brews right between 200 and 205 degrees

  2.  It brews FAST (3  minutes)

True, Bunn's may not come in the slickest looking package, but they produce fabulous coffee.

If you're looking for something a bit fancier, but nearly as simple, you should check out the Bosch Porsche coffee maker too....

Can you provide more detail on your stirring? When in the brew process are you doing this? It may shed some light on one of my issues out of many :-) Thanks
