I've been reading as many articles as I can find about press pots and their use, hoping to find someone mention a slick method of cleaning their press pots. I picked up a slick to-go Bodum press pot the other day to use while at work and the only inconvenience about the whole package is getting rid of those pressed grounds and get ready for the next batch in a clean, unakward, work friendly manner.
I don't rinse the grounds down the sink while at home because I'm assuming those wouldn't be good for the plumbing. I usually try to shake, wiggle, pound or otherwise manipulate the grounds out of the bottom of the pot into the trash and then wash out what's left.
Also, I don't see mention of it much but I saw somewhere that you should either avoid using dish soap to clean any coffee maker parts or use very little soap. True? Detergents that should be used instead?
These may be really silly questions.....but has anyone figured out a slick, clean, simple method to get the pot cleaned up and ready to go for the next round?
I use a press pot at work. One thing that makes it easier to rinse clean is a Swiss Gold one piece plunger. There is really nothing to disassemble.
I just rinse the grounds down the sink. It's like a bran muffin for the pipes.
A little soap periodically is good for getting any oils out. You don't want any buildup that can get rancid. However, promptly rinsing everything in hot water getsmost of the oils off. If you have a brush or even a piece of paper towel, that will help loosen anything and put off the need for cleaning with soap.
We use a rubber spatula to scrape the grounds into a fine colander we have sitting in a bowl (we save our grounds for the tomato garden). Then we rinse the remaining grounds down the garbage disposal. I have friends that just put all there grounds down the disposal they say it helps to keep the pipes clean. If that's the case I think I need to cut back my coffee consumption. :)
