Subject: Techivorm vs Moka Brew - my own trials and tribulations

I want to thank all for their advice and help on this forum.  I came to this site after my last coffee maker dies and I wanted to replace it with something that would make a full bodies flavorful cup.  After reading a myriad  of review here, I ended up trying to decide between the Moka Brew and the and the Technivorm clubline,  I chose the Moka Brew for price, and what seemed a unique brewing process.  After receiving the Moka Brew my quest for that elusive awesome cup began.  I purchased a scale, tried different grinds, water/grind ratios, different damping techniques and came back to forum and received advice from those more successful with the Moka Brew than I was.  I am glad that there are those that achieve success with this machine, and it is a neat designed machine.  For me it was like an unfulfilled relationship that I just could not consummate.  Over the course of a month I went through quite a few pounds of coffee, and made untold pots of which only one was almost there.  I just could not close the gap between kind of good and good.  As my 30 day return window loomed I had to make a decision to continue on or admit defeat.  I chose the latter feeling that for me, this machine was just too much work.

I then ordered the Technivorm with some trepidation from Boyds.  I figured what could be so different about one drip machine to the other?  I have had the machine for almost a month and all I can say is I am in coffee nirvana, I have not had one bad cup.  It does an amazing job of extracting the flavor from beans giving a full-bodied, aromatic, flavorful cup.  What is even more impressive is that it does all this while brewing a pot amazingly fast.  When I opened the box I was disappointed in how low tech the machine was, but it is extremely well built and the results speak for themselves.  I just wanted to share my experience in case others are trying to decide the same things.

Hey Firewired, sorry to hear of your frustrating with the Krups Moka Brew.  I've been getting consistently great coffee with mine.  But you have tweaked my interest in the Techivorm (always interested in improving my taste).  Thanks for your post.  Curious, did you mixed or transfered the moka brew before drinking.  I found this to be important in getting a consistent flavor.

Firewired,

Sorry your Moka Brew experience didn't work out because I know what this little machine is capable of, but finding a new brewer that lives up to expectations is always a good thing.

What type of grinder do you have?  Just curious because when I upgraded to the Cunill the MB got dramatically better.  I think it's quite grind sensitive.

After an initial adjustment period to get the grind and amount just right I've been having excellent results with the MB.  In the last year there have been many mornings that I've thought "this could very well be the best cup of coffee I've ever had".  I've often been simply astonished at the taste, unable to imagine how it could be improved, nearly lost in that savoring reverie.

If the Technivorm is better than that, I'm not sure I could stand it, but one of these days I may just have to try it.  Thanks for the post.

Yooperjohn,

Thanks for taking it in the positive way it was intended.  I tried to do all the suggestions that everyone offered me online.  One of them was to mix the brew prior to pouring a cup, which I tried.

Cafedj,

I think of you as the Maestro of the Moka Brew.  I tried to follow your directions down to the letter.  Sorry that I didn't have success.  The grinder that I have been using is the Solis Maestro Plus.  I tried varying the grind to see if that got me any closer, again unfortunately without success.

I have been using the Techivorm Clubline for almost two months now and agree with Firewired, it is an amazing machine. Every pot of coffee made with it so far has been a treat, and the get-aquainted time is practically non-existant. I just use 2 tablespoons of coffee per 5-6 ounce cup and the results are a cup that comes close to french press without the sediment (I use paper
filters). IMO it beats the Yama vac-pot which I have found to be very inconsistant in cup quality, maybe I am doing something wrong. With the Technivorm you don't have to worry about doing anything wrong.
