I'm using it with the mod, but it seems there's a mod for the technovorm also (some spray head thing)...
but true I'm using the mod, I drilled 10 holes in the top of my unit...
it made good coffee before just didn't get the saturation of the grinds l...
i stirred it  during the brew at that time and that was effective....

Just for clarification, there is a spray head attachment for the Technivorm.  I would not call it a mod though.  It is a standard part, costs $7 from Boyds, and takes 1 second (literally) to put on and take off.

I wish I knew about the Clarity when I bought my Technivorm, I probably would have tried it at 1/5th the cost.

Do you happen to know the wattage of the Clarity? Just wondering, because the machines that brew in the correct temp range tend to be greater than 1400 watts.

Posted October 7, 2004 link

mine states it's 1230watt and it has 2 seperate heating supplies, the burner and the hot water, ....most makers only use one heat source ...
there several posts on alt.coffee on it I believe....

What makes the Clarity and the Technivorm deliver the proper temperature is not so much the wattage but that the hot water is insulated from the cold water as it rises through the reservoir. I briefly owned a Melitta fast brew with a 1400 watt element. It heated the water quickly but lost temperature as the hot water came up through the cold. If I pre-heated the water before brewing, the temperature of the output water was within the accepted range. Obviously, that was a big hassle and I was glad to give it up for the Clarity.

I'm seriously new here.  My 15-year-old Melitta drip machine is ready to be retired and I've been searching around for what to replace it with.  This thread is just what I wanted, but then I read this:

"true I'm using the mod, I drilled 10 holes in the top of my unit..."

So what exactly is the mod?

it is here...step by step instruction....I used a box cutter for everything,(including drilling the holes)
I just kept turning the box cutter until i got the size of holes i liked....

That is fascinating!!  I ordered a Clarity today, before getting this reply.  Already couldn't wait for it to get here.   Now I doubly can't wait to test it as-is and then get the tools out and modify it.  (Who knew!)

Thank you very much!

I use my Clarity without the modification because every time I have peeked under the hood while brewing, the grounds appear well saturated. I make two eight cup batches in the morning so that my wife and I always have a fresh cup. Each eight cup pot fills two of our mugs.

True they probably appear saturated, and eventually they all get wet, but the "mod" enables better distribution of the water over the entire grounds. not just the center soaking then wetting to the outside....it soaks throughout the basket outside and center, it just allows for better extraction of the grounds...

but your right it does make a good cup , regardless of what you do to it....moddin' or stirrin' or leavin'

take care

teresa -

That's why I thought it was important enough to bring up.

It's easy for the unsuspecting to wander in the door here and not fully realize the implications of "geek" in the name of the establishment. :)

We'll all be interested in the results of your experiment.

The machine gets delivered next week, and I'll take a few days to try it as-is (along with my coworkers). Depending on how satisfied I am with the as-is coffee, I may be buying two more machines (potentially ending up with one for work, one for home and one for my folks' house).  If that's the case, I would probably do all the mods at one time just because it'll be a production for me.  Oh wait, I should probably taste the coffee on a modified machine before I go and modify all of them.  Oh wait again, I could do a side-by-side test of coffee from a machine with the mod and without the mod.

This whole geek thing is infecting me!

It'll be a couple of weeks but I will be back with a report.
