I am new to all of this, so this is probably the first great cup of coffee I have ever brewed!

My first attempts were bitter to a little bitter.   I finally got a proper water/coffee ratio and grind size.   This was my third batch using the coffee beans I just got from Intelligentsia.  I believe that made a difference too as my coffee got better as soon as I started using those beans and the prior pots were brewed from locally bought beans that the roasting date was a mystery to me.

I have more experimenting to do.  I brewed the good pot by leaving the ratio(8 tbls beans/32oz water) the same but moving to a courser grind.  Seems like I'm using more coffee to water than others whose posts I've read.  And I gather if I reduce the grind size, I can use less coffee?

Mainly, I wanted to thank everybody here, even though I have never posted before, you have been immensely helpful.   I've never posted yet because I find the answer to all my questions by using search.  Sometimes I think I'll finally have to post a question, but sure enough I'll stumble across the answer here somewhere.

And during all that lurking I scored a Clarity for $19.95!  I bought a SwissGold filter for it and after reading a million posts and reviews, decided on the Capresso Infinity grinder.

Happy Festivus Everyone!

Welcome my friend!  I like your pic!  Who is that you are holding?  I have a Rat Terrier named Minnie.  She is my best friend...

Bingo, begin home roasting and you will come to really know how important it is to have fresh roasted beans.  It makes all the difference.

Yes.  A finer grind will allow or create a faster extraction.  When using smaller grounds then there is more ground surface area in contact with water.  So a faster, deeper extraction will occur.  Making for a stronger coffee.  For example if you are using 50g of ground coffee.  One batch at a coarse grind and another at a fine grind in the same amount of water then the finer grind will extract faster then the more coarse coffee.  If you keep the brew time the same the smaller grind will taste stronger than the more coarse.

To answer your question, yes, with a finer grind you can use less coffee.  Grinding creates surface area.  There's an ideal amount of total surface area for a given amount of water and brewing time that will yield your preferred taste.  As the grind coarseness gets finer you are increasing the total surface area per bean, so you can use fewer beans.

Tim - didn't see your post as I was typing mine.  Good answer. ;-)

Cool!  That's our Rat Terrior Ziggy when he was a puppy.  He is three now and the best dog I've ever had.

I am already reading up on home roasting, mainly here on the roasting forum :).  Trying to figure what method I want to start with.  My wife likes the good coffee too, so she won't mind me finding another hobby to spend money on.

Thanks for the grind size info folks,  I will go that direction then in my next experiments.

I love my Clarity. I have had it for about 3 weeks now and don't know how I drank coffee out of my 4 cup Mr. Coffee drip.  I had been using a blade grinder but my son (who works for Starbucks) gave me the Bartista Grinder for Christmas. If anyone is interested they are on sale for $99.  Now I want to get into roasting my own beans. I am thinking of getting French Roast Plus 8. Out of 5 family members only 2 of us drink coffee so I think that this will be just the right size.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I hope everyone had a great holiday,
Gail

Hey Paul, what grind setting on the Capresso did you find the best?

Hi Pete,

I've been using the 3rd line/notch on the Fine setting and getting pretty good results.

The 3rd line in the Fine area as in 6 clicks from the left of the unit, correct?
