Subject: Shelf Life question

I've performed a search here and on Google but couldn't find an answer to my question.  What is the maximum shelf life of a box of Gevalia Kafffe which has never had the vacuum packaging opened?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!  Welcome to coffeegeek...

I'd say that coffee is best for drip or French press brewing within two weeks of being roasted.  Also, it should never be ground more than a few minutes before brewing.  Vacuum packaging does very little to slow the aging of coffee.

So according to my opinion, that Gevalia was already too old before it got to you.  Of course it's entirely possible that Gevalia would say the coffee is fine for months or maybe even years as long as the package hasn't been opened.

The very best thing is to find agood local roaster.  If you don't have any in your area then there are several great roasters who sell online with quick shipping so you can get truly fresh, super-high-quality coffee.  Once you try the best you can never go back to the rest.

Thanks for the welcome!  I know it's best fresh and I grind the beans when I can.  We just found some unopened Gevalia boxes from when we moved and I didn't know if it was a matter of "not as fresh" or "unsafe."  I just opened one and it doesn't seem very fresh so I won't likely use them.  It's just a shame.

er, you don't have to worry about it being 'not safe'; there's nothing in it that could go 'bad' to the point of harming you. the only possible harm that could come to you is if you serve it to some of the other posters here... ;)
