Just ordered the Capresso Infinity for $99 from JL Hufford. They are currently running a special where you get the brushed chrome instead of black plastic which is a nice upgrade. The sales rep was courteous, knowledgable and quick. He took my order over the phone (i wanted to call to see if they had stock). They sent out an email confirmation seconds after placing my order and said it should ship out tomorrow. So far great service from www.JLHufford.com. I'll send an update after receiving it.
No luck with the Chemex though... i've been outbid twice on eBay. They're selling for what a new one costs... i don't understand why but whatever.

Just a quick FYI on the electric kettle part (if you go french press, or vacuum pot). I was able to pick up a Melita 1.7L capacity electric kettle at the local Target store for only $19!!!
It works great, and paired with a Bodum French Press (1L capacity) I'm off and running with "real" coffee now.
(Grinder is next. Just discovered Sweet Maria's is close enough to remove shipping as a necessity!!!)

Hi Johnny.
I just recently went through a very similar quest. Here's what I ended up with for what it's worth. I ended up with a Bodum eSantos 12 cup for $99 although for one person, the Jr. would be fine and probably runs around $60 to $80 depending on where you buy it. I also did some research and found that the general consensus was that the Capresso Infinity was the better burr grinder for the price between in and the Solis Maestro.
I have had no problems with my eSantos to date. I used the “quarter trick” at first because it “seemed the thing to do”. But found that with the Infinity, I could grind 2 clicks in from the right on the Fine setting and the brew time works out great. I get minimal fines and maximum oil. My brew time is in the 3:15 to 4:00 min range and I have the convenience of not having to heat water, stand and pour. I used a Melitta drip cone for a month or so and was consistently late for work. Luckily, I have some latitude in that respect.
So, with your budget as presented, it’s very possible to get a good, consistent, convienient and hot cuppa without too much hassle.
Good Luck!
