Subject: Ground or Whole Bean: Coffee Amount Question

When I look at a brewing chart that states, for example, to use 14 tablespoons of coffee for 42 ounces of water, does it refer to ground coffee or whole beans? If I scoop out a tablespoon of beans, will it still equate to a tablespoon after it is ground? I would think it would be less than a tablespoon because the air space between the beans is no longer present. I know that if I went by weight, my dilemma would be solved, but I am not that geeked out (yet!) Neal

It refers to ground, and surprisingly, I just found this out, ground coffee takes up more space than whole beans.  5 scoops of beans equates to 8 ground

I could see that.  There's more empty space between the whole beans as compared to the same amount in grounds.

Interesting. I tried out that theory today, and sure enough, I got 12+ tablespoons of ground coffee from 10 tablespoons of beans. This revelation made a big difference in today's pot of morning coffee. Thanks, Neal.

Hallalujah!

Santa was nice to me this year and brought me a digital scale, along with a nice baking book full of baker formula style recipes.
Nothing's easier then tossing a big bowl onto the scale, taring it, and just pouring the ingredients in till the correct weight appears.

Makes portion control really easy too, including coffee.

Yes, I guess it makes me a geek though, but it's a really great little machine for under $40!

Morning coffee is great too.  Open the container, dump till I see the magic number, and by then the water is ready to pour.
(I changed to sugar cubes though, weighing out the sugar syrup for consistancy WAS a bit retentive, even by my standards... LOL)

The coarseness of your grind will also affect the volume.

“And what flavor would you like in your coffee, sir?”

I think you meant the other way around.

Nope. Check for yourself. LedZeppelin wrote in an earlier post:

I suppose you could tamp the ground coffee into your scoop, and the difference would be less dramatic, but we're not making espresso. I'm leaning toward using weight alone. Just add the beans until you hit your magic number on the scale and then grind away!

Sorry, I read it the wrong way from the git go.  I figured it would have been the other way.  Oh well.
