Subject: Recommended beans for a newbe

I've recently become interested in premium coffee. I've never much cared for coffee, but only sampled the cheaper mass-market stuff. I'm starting to enjoy the better quality stuff and I'm looking to stop forking over the cash and start brewing at home.

I've got a Swiss gold filter, holder, and electric kettle for pour over brewing. I've also picked up a Krups Burr grinder. I'm considereing getting a roaster, but want to explore my tastes a little.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some beans? I've heard of a local roaster (Paramount Coffee) that has a good rep and have been checking them out. Since I'm pretty much starting from scratch, I don't have too much of a reference of what's good and bad examples of styles, except for the mentioned mass-market stuff. I probably should mention I seem to be liking the city roast areas, but willing to try anything that's highly recommended.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for my pour over method, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

Finding a local roaster is probably the best way to start out on this journey.  As far as suggesting a particular coffee...well I can't unless I know what they are offering.  Do they have a website?

There are several excellent roasters across the continent that will roast and ship to you but I would still start locally and go from there.

I would suggest starting out with what's known as "single origin" coffees.  Try a few different countries...perhaps a Costa Rican, an African such as Kenya or Ethiopian, and an Indonesian like Sumatra or Sulawesi.  This will give your palette a very general idea about the differences of South+Central Americans/Africans/Indonesians.  By avoiding blends in the beginning you will help to narrow down your personal taste preferences.

Good luck
